Laylatul Qadr, the Night of Decree, falls in the ninth month of the Islamic Calendar i.e. Ramadan. It has been mentioned in the Holy Quran. One whole Surah is named after it, which is Surah-tul-Qadr. The translation of the Surah is-

“In the Name of Allah the Most Gracious the Most Merciful

1.       Verily, We have sent it (this Quran) down in the night of Al-Qadr (Decree).

2.       And what will make you know what the night of Al-Qadr (Decree) is?

3.       The night of Al-Qadr (Decree) is better than a thousand months.

4.       Therein descend the angels and the Ruh (Jibril) by Allah’s Permission with all Decrees.

5.       There is Peace until the appearance of dawn.”

These verses from the Holy Quran give the best definition of Laylatul Qadr. It is the best night of the whole year. As given it was this night when the Quran was revealed to Prophet Muhammad (pbuh) in the Cave Hira. This is one thing that makes this night so special.

On this night, the angels and Jibril descend who write the fate of the person for the coming year. This is why most of the du’as for this night asks for special favours. We should also recite as much Quran as possible and ask for forgiveness in this world as well as for the Hereafter. The angel Jibril also shakes hands with people who are praying from the depth of their heart. There will be peace until dawn on that particular night. The Muttaqeen (Allah-fearing) people will experience an incredible harmony and happiness, a deep feeling of immense pleasure as a product of enormous divine blessings in this night.

The worship and praying done on this night are better than that of a thousand months. If Allah would not multiply the rewards of believers like this, they would not be able to reach (salvation), but Allah multiplies for them the reward for good deeds. The Prophet (pbuh) is reported to have said, “He who passes the Laylatul Qadr in Prayer, out of faith and seeking pleasure of Allah, will have his past sins forgiven.”

During the last ten days, we should ask anxiously for forgiveness from Allah for our past sins. Reciting of Qura’an, praying Taraweeh and Qayyam-ul-Layl and going into I’tikaf (elimination of all worldly activities) are the ways of worshipping in these days.

The Prophet came out to inform us about the Night of Qadr but two Muslims were quarrelling with each other. Therefore, the Prophet said, "I came out to inform you about the Night of Qadr but such-and-such persons were quarrelling, so the news about it had been taken away; yet that might be for your own good.” However, Prophet (pbuh) told us, “Search for the night of Qadr in the odd nights of the last ten nights of Ramadan”

Ayesha (R) says that she asked the Prophet (pbuh): O Messenger of Allah, if I come to locate the Blessed night then how should I pray in this night. The Prophet (pbuh) said:  Say Allahumma In-Naka a'fuwn, tuhibul'afwa fa'fo 'anni (Allah Thou art Most Forgiving and love forgiveness then do thou forgive me) (Tirmidhi)

The dates that has been agreed by all is that, it is on one of the last five odd nights of Ramadan. We have entered the last ten days and have started praying on the nights. Those who have not should start now and hope to find Laylatul Qadr.

Some people of the community disappoint us by what they do on these nights. Yes! They do stay awake but instead of worshipping Allah (s w t) and reciting the Holy Quran they eat, gossip the matters not concerning them or got to shops. These people should not be expecting the blessings that worth a thousand month’s (eighty-three years and four months) even if they find Laylatul Qadr.
May Allah (s w t) guide us along the straight path, forgive us and bestow upon us the blessings of the night that hides the rewards worth a thousand months, Amin!
