Business community urged to capitalize potential, support national interests

ISLAMABAD Oct 17 (NNI): Chairman National Accountability Bureau Lt General Khalid Maqbool Wednesday urged the business community to capitalize on its potential and supportive of national interests in time of crisis.

The NAB Chief said, in the aftermath of the events of last month, there has been a slowdoen in the economy but the business community must show strength to withstand the pressures with a view to pulling the country out of this critical situation.
He was talking to members of the business community at a reception held at the Sindh Governor’s House at Karachi the other day, said a release here Wednesday.

The General also mentioned NAB’s policy transition to eradicate institutional corruption, which will bring in a positive change for a business friendly environment by streamlining systems and procedures in government offices.

General Khalid Maqbool reiterated the government’s resolve in creating a corruption free environment in the economic sector, which is imperative for growth. He said that the free enterprise is the backbone of any economy and in a developing country like Pakistan, the business community plays a crucial role.
He urged them to come forward in a unified approach aimed at securing out national interests. He said NAB would be given a permanent status to play its role in creating a favourable environment for healthy business activity.

Referring to the so-called builders mafia the said NAB has taken cognisance of the issue and its investigating the purported misappropriations both in the private and public sector. He made a particular mention of NAB’s activities in KDA, KESC, NDFC, Steel Mills, PIA, PNSC, State Life, KPT and PQA.

Mentioning about the current law and order situation, he said that while government is making utmost efforts to safeguard the interests of a common citizen, businessmen should also play their role by refraining to surrender to the pressure groups calling for strikes.

The reception was also attended by the Corps Commander and other senior ranking officials of the Sindh government. Later he called on Governor in his office and thanked him for his support to NAB operations. –NNI
