PESHAWAR Oct 18 (NNI): The NWFP Minister for Information Syed Imtiaz Hussain Gillani has said that both India and Israel would feel happy in case Pakistan is detracted from the narrow track chosen for it by President General Pervez Musharraf during the present situation which he said was the worst critical this country had ever faced since its creation in 1947.
Addressing the oath taking ceremony of Liberal Union of Journalists at Haripur he said that demonstrations and agitation could not help control the situation while the destruction of properties in Pakistan could do no harm to USA. However, he emphatically stated that any body having any better solution for protecting the interest of Pakistan than the one chosen by Gen. Musharraf should come forward and present the same instead of chanting hollow slogans. He said that Afghanistan is our brotherly Islamic country and every effort was being made to protect the interest of our Afghan brothers but at the same time "we have to protect Pakistan first".
Spelling out the efforts Pakistan has made for the protection of Afghans, Mr. Gillani pointed out that even in presence of US Secretary of State Colin Powell, Gen. Musharraf four times repeated that the attacks against terrorists in Afghanistan should be targeted and the operation short. Again, he pointed out that it was due to the efforts of Pakistan that Americans now do not use the words "crusade", "dead or alive" and "Smoking them out" and are talking about rebuilding and social sector development of that war ravaged country. He said that we should think of what would have happened, had President Gen. Pervez Musharraf not decided to join the world community against terrorism.
Referring to the working of the present government, Mr.Gillani pointed out that during the last two years no financial scandal of any minister either provincial or federal had been reported while at the same time, it had added nothing to the foreign debt which the previous governments had been doing continuously. He pointed out that while the debt of Pakistan had reached to US$ 37billion, our former leaders investments in the foreign banks had crossed the triggering figure of US$40billion.
Referring to the problem of basic facilities of life like education Mr. Gilani stated that Pakistanis required access to better health, education and other basic amenities and not agitation. He pointed out that during the last two years 15 new degree colleges and three new universities were opened by the provincial government. He also said that no one would be allowed to exploit the young students for their political motives.
The function was also addressed by district Nazim Raja Amir Zaman Sharif, Farooq of Daily Jehad, Agha Abdul Ghafoor Tahir, Lala Mohammad Zaman, Qazi Mohammad Asad, Jehangir Khan advocate, Ihsan-ul- Haq Piracha besides others. The speakers stressed the need for creating the sense of broad mindedness and forbearances among the people.
Earlier, the minister information administered oath to the office bearers of liberal Union of Journalists.ŚNNI
