Pakistani court says it can't declare people heroes or traitors

LAHORE, October 19 (Internews): No person can be declared a hero or a traitor through a judicial ruling, a Pakistani court has ruled.

"All citizens of the country are equal before the law and the courts decide cases in accordance with the law of the land," the Lahore High Court ruled on Friday.

Justice Khalil Ramday delivered the verdict while rejecting a petition of renowned public interest litigant M D Tahir, in which he had sought a court ruling for the establishment of a national government in the country comprising some religious leaders and a former spymaster.

Tahir wanted the court to order a national government comprising Jamaat-e-Islamic chief Qazi Hussain Ahmed, former intelligence chief General Hamid Gul, chiefs of their own factions of Jamiat Ulema-e-Islam Samiul Haq and Fazlur Rehman and chief of Tanzeem-e-Islami Dr Israr Ahmed.

He also asked the court to declare these religious leaders as heroes of the country and military ruler General Pervez Musharraf a traitor for agreeing to support the United States in carrying out military strikes in neighbouring Afghanistan. -Internews
