LAHORE, Oct 27 (NNI): Federal Minister for
Labour, Manpower and Overseas Pakistanis Omar Asghar Khan has said that
Government was actively considering to set up a special fund for the
financial support of laid off workers from export oriented
industry in the country.
Talking to workers of Textile and Garment Industries here on Saturday, the Minister said that government is committed to protect rights of workers and all possible efforts would be made to provide financial relief to them in present crises. He expressed great concern over the economic fall out on Pakistan especially post September 11, events took place in USA.
Omar Asghar Khan said that the cancellation of orders by certain foreign buyers after September 11events was resulting in lay off of workers from the export oriented industries. He said that the United States and the governments of European countries should take steps to get assured their importers for importing products from Pakistan, that business activities are continuing as usual.
The Minister said that Ministry of Labour, Manpower and Overseas Pakistanis, Ministry of Finance and Industries would meet soon to consider a setting up social fund with the support of donor countries, so as to provide financial support to the affected workers in short term, who are being laid off because of cancellation of orders in our industrial products. -NNI
