Islamabad, October 26, 2001.
In a significant development, the Asian Group at the United Nations in New
York yesterday endorsed Pakistan's candidature for a non-permanent seat of
the United Nations Security Council for the term 2003-2004. This endorsement means that Pakistan will be the sole candidate in next year's elections for the Asian seat to be vacated by Singapore on 31st December 2002. Pakistan has the distinction to earlier serve on the UN Security Council during the terms 1952-53, 1968-69, 1976-77, 1983-84 and 1993-94.
In line with the tradition of the Asian Group that allows endorsement of
the candidatures for the Security Council one year before the actual
election, Sri Lanka in its capacity as the Chairman of the Group proposed
endorsement of Pakistan's candidature. Thirty countries took the floor and
supported the proposal including Bahrain, Oman, Nepal, Malaysia, Saudi
Arabia, Syria, Bangladesh, Turkmenistan, Kuwait, Lebanon, Singapore, Sri
Lanka, Japan, Iran, Qatar, ROK, China, Iraq, Fiji, Cambodia, Bhutan, the
Philippines, Indonesia, Maldives, Uzbekistan, Thailand, Tajikistan, DPRK,
Papua New Guinea and Nauru.
