MPs call for UK arms embargo on Israel

LONDON Nov 3 (NNI): In two separate petitions to parliament, MPs have called on the British government to suspend arms trading with the Zionist regime and for Israeli leader Ariel Sharon to be brought to account for military brutality against Palestinian civilians.
"British military hardware continues to be sold to Israel and used against Palestinians in defiance of UK export criteria," warns one Early Day Motion, which has so far been signed by 15 Labour back bench MPs.
It also points out that the arms trade is a two-way process, with British police forces including London's Metropolitan Police "buying Israeli bullets" and the Defence Ministry about to purchase "Israeli anti-tank missiles." Other sales to the UK were said to have also included grenades, shells and military avionics.
The British government should suspend arms trade "in the light of the continued Israeli occupation of Palestinian lands, the intensified repression by Ariel Sharon's government, the increased illegal settlement activity in the West Bank and east Jerusalem and Israel's continuing violations of UN resolutions," the MPs said.
A second Early Day Motion expresses support for a viable Palestinian state and urges the international community, and the UK and the US in particular, to take the lead "in insisting that international law be applied in the occupied territories." It calls for Sharon's government to be held "unequivocally accountable for its policy of brute military force against a Palestinian civilian population during incursions by the Israeli Army."
The petition is supported by 15 largely different Labour MPs, including former Foreign Office Minister Tony Lloyd as well as two Liberal Democrats and one Welsh nationalist.
It warns that failure to take action could "result in the undermining and even collapse of the Palestinian Authority accompanied by an inevitable and dangerous further destabilisation in the region." –NNI
