Pakistan Strongly Condemns Torture on Pak High Commission Staffer in New Delhi

Islamabad, December 23, 2001.

The Government of Pakistan strongly condemns the illegal detention and
torture of Mr. Mohammad Sharif Khan, a staff member of the High Commission of Pakistan in New Delhi by the Intelligence operatives of the Indian Government on 22nd December 2001. Mr. Sharif Khan while shopping in a market in New Delhi was kidnapped at 5.30 pm. During interrogation, he was stripped naked, severely beaten and tortured resulting in visible and internal injuries. The medical report confirms that Mr. Khan was ruthlessly beaten and tortured. He was released after 5 hours after he signed under duress, a statement acknowledging involvement in espionage.
The Ministry of Foreign Affairs has lodged a strong protest with the
Indian High Commission in Islamabad over this reprehensible, provocative and unacceptable action on the part of the Indian Government.
