World leaders phone Musharraf

  ISLAMABAD, December 29 (Internews): A string of world leaders have
 telephoned Pakistan President Pervez Musharraf to express concern at the
 rising tensions in South Asia, officials here said Saturday
 President Muhammad Khatami of Iran, President Jacques Chirac of France,
 President Moammar Qaddafi of Libya and United States Secretary of State
 Colin Powell made separate telephonic contacts with Musharraf late
 Friday night
 "The world leaders showed concern over the rising tension in the region,
 and expressed their support for efforts to de-escalate the situation on
 Pakistan-India borders," a spokesman for the Ministry of Foreign Affairs
 said  "They were appreciative of the sense of responsibility and utmost
 restraint demonstrated by Pakistan," he said, adding that President
 Musharraf elaborated the steps taken by Pakistan to exercise maximum
 restraint. - Internews
