Gibbering Children
Sadia Hanif

Scientists are confirming what mothers have long suspected: Though it sounds silly, baby talk has a serious purpose.
Oo, ee, and ah are the most basic sounds in any language, and all over the world mothers stress them when they talk to their infants. Indeed, researchers in the U.S., Russia, and Sweden recorded 30 Moms cooing to their babies and found they all did the same thing -- they gave extra emphasis to vowels, saying boooot and dawwwggie and beeed.
It's our way of teaching children the building blocks of language. By drawing out these vowels, experts say, we allow babies to better distinguish between sounds. We do it unconsciously, as though the trait were genetic -- some consolation, perhaps, the next time you find yourself gibbering to a wide-eyed newborn.
