Pakistani Student Sets Record
in the International General Certificate of Secondary Education (IGCSE) Exams June 2001 of University of Cambridge Special

Sept. 2001 - Riyadh, The recent announcement of results for the International General Certificate of Secondary Education (IGCSE) exams June 2001 conducted all over the world by the University of Cambridge Local Examination Syndicate (UCLES) indicates that Abdullah Zafar Al-Syed, a Pakistani pupil of Manarat Boys English School of Riyadh has secured all A* grades in all 8-subjects he appeared. This unparalleled feat he achieved at the age of 14 only. Interestingly, he obtained an A* in English First Language although the Principal, Mr. Rizk Kamh, and the British teacher for English language, both had expressed their opinion that non-English students would not be able to get an A* in the First Language English examination.  A great majority of Manarat School students and their parents believe that tuition is necessary for good grades in IGCSE.  To cater for this requirement, the School offers tuitions after the regular school hours against additional fee.  Abdullah did not go for any tuition other than regular school education, rather depended on his capabilities, and by the help of Almighty Allah succeeded.
The school management pays more attention to those students who sit 4 IGCSE exams one year and 4 exams the next year, compared to those who sit 8-subjects at the end of two years.  Abdullah had opted for 8-subjects and was thus in a class considered by the school as second-rate.  His results have proved that 8-subjects in one-sitting is far more respectable option.  He always secured highest merit positions throughout in the Riyadh Manarat and earlier in Al-Khobar Manarat school and enjoyed his teachers’ accolade.

British GCSE or its international version IGCSE are successors of old O-level qualification---all conducted by University of Cambridge Local Examination Syndicate (UCLES) throughout the world. About one-million students appear in IGCSE, O-level, or A-level exams all over the world. UCLES exams and syllabi are considered the most prestigious and of the highest standard all over the world.

British Council in Riyadh has confirmed that no one in the Kingdom has performed with all A* in eight subjects neither this year nor in the previous years.  "This is the highest performance in IGCSE we ever witnessed", said the exam officer.
