Federal Cabinet Meets

President General Pervez Musharraf directed the Ministers to ensure
implementation of the decisions, taken by the Cabinet within the prescribed
time frame in letter and spirit. He was chairing a meeting of the Federal
He said issues should be addressed promptly and bottlenecks in implementation should be brought to his immediate notice for decision and resolution. The implementation status of the decisions, the President said, will be monitored by the Cabinet every week.
The President directed the Finance Ministry to help the provinces in getting out of the debt trap. The provinces, he said, could only undertake development projects and plans for socio-economic uplift of the general masses if they are financially strong and have fewer liabilities. The Federal Government should help them in getting out of the financial problems, said the President.
The President directed the Ministry of Finance to ensure access to required funding by the district governments so that the devolution of power at the district level is implemented effectively through undertaking of projects. Financial autonomy at the district level must be ensured, he added.
While taking stock of the performance of different sectors, the President emphasized the need for improving the investment climate in the country, which would generate economic activity and enhance employment opportunities besides increasing the national income. The C.I.R.C., he said, should accelerate its efforts and facilitate the revival of the sick industries and sale of the ones which could not be revived. The Privatization Commission should also concentrate on privatization of public sector units, added the President.
While taking strong exception to the violation of social and cultural norms of the country at a recently held function in aid of charity at the Lahore Fort, the Federal Cabinet decided to advise the provincial governments to keep a close vigil on such events to ensure that the country’s socio-cultural norms are fully respected. The President said that he wished to lead Pakistan on the path of moderation, tolerance, democracy and progress but not on the path of westernization which clashed with our own values and traditions.
The Cabinet condemned the act of terrorism in Rawalpindi yesterday and reiterated the resolve of the government to wipe out sectarianism from the country. The Cabinet directed the authorities to gear up efforts to arrest those responsible for this heinous crime.
