Icy Stretch Claims 2 Lives
Mar 10 (NNI) A young Pakistani woman and an American who stopped to assist
were battered to pieces after getting hit by a tractor-trailer that slid
out of control on a winding, hilly section of a major U.S Highway I-80 in
Pennsylvania state. Zainub Ashraf, 26 was related grand child of Ambassador
Her mother Asma 54, niece of Amb Riaz Khokar was standing just 2 feet from her daughter when the truck hit Zainab and Michael.
Zainab with her mother Asma Ashraf was on her way to New York to meet her elder Sister who is studying in New York. She lost control of her car on an icy section of road. The car ran off the road and rolled onto its roof in the median.
A white American Michael K. Overton 42 stopped at the scene and helped both mother and her daughter , out of their overturned vehicle. He gave his coat to Zainab to prevent her of chilly weather.
Asma her daughter Zainab and Michael were standing on the berm looking at the overturned car when they heard a tractor-trailer sliding on the road behind them. Asma the mother, turned to see the rig almost on top of them and witnessed the death of her loved one with open eyes.
The tractor-trailer, driven by Dennis K. Pingel, 46, came upon the scene and slid out of control in the same spot as the Zainab’s car did. The rig ran off the road and slammed into the overturned car, striking Overton and Zainub Ashraf, killing them both instantly.
The tractor-trailer was seriously damaged, and Pingel suffered minor injuries. Mother Asma Ashraf also suffered minor injuries in the car accident earlier.
One of the eastbound lanes was closed about five hours because of the crash and the rig leaked diesel fuel required the cleanup efforts of a hazardous materials crew.
Michael K. Overton, who stopped to assist two women was a former building inspector for the city of Warren. He took a disability retirement in April 1999 after he suffered injuries in an auto crash in 1999.
Police ruled the deaths an accident and no charges have been filed. Both victims died of blunt force trauma to the head and torso.
