Imran Khan Calls on Pres. Musharraf

Islamabad, March 28, 2002. The President General Pervez Musharraf has said that the government will ensure free, fair and transparent elections in October 2002 to the national and provincial assemblies in order for the democratic process to take firm roots in the country. He was talking to a 20-member delegation of Pakistani Tehrik-e-Insaf led by Mr. Imran Khan, which called on him here Thursday.
General Pervez Musharraf stated that he was of the firm belief that democracy, and in democracy alone, lay the best interest of the country and people of Pakistan. He reiterated that steps would be taken to ensure that in the future the democratic process is not derailed. He said that not only the Pakistani nation, but the entire world is also looking beyond October 2002 and keen for the continuity of the reforms and restructuring process that has been put in place. He emphasized that sustainability of these processes is essential for reviving the economy of the country, attracting investments and raising the stature of Pakistan in the comity of nations.
The President reiterated the need for a stable political environment in the country, which can only be brought about with adequate checks and balances among all power centers. He said this issue was being examined and addressed by the National Reconstruction Bureau as part of the government’s political restructuring programme.
The leader of Pakistan Tehrik-e-Insaf Mr. Imran Khan said ideologically his party supported a number of steps taken by the Government in national interests as these were some of the issues, which they also stood for. He supported the devolution of power plan and accountability process saying continuity of policies was essential in the long-term interests of the country.
He stated that the various options for ensuring the continuity of the government’s agenda would be taken up for further discussion and deliberations for a final decision by the party.
