Nov. 22 Manarat Al Riyadh and Bangladesh International English School (BIES)
delighted the Friday fans when they took part in the best-of-three series and then a
Challenge match under the supervision of Central Province Cricket Association (CPCA) which
was sponsored by the Saudi Hollandi Bank (SHB).
This two days 20-overs event which is part of the exercise for the forthcoming bigger SHB
Inter School gala during the third week of January 2000 proved to be a success amongst the
young ones, said Asif Saleem, vice president of the CPCA while outlining the details.
For the best-of-three series championship, BIES defeated Manarat twice to clinch the
trophy. In the first match, the victors won by 52 runs. Batting first, they made 162 for
9. Their scorers were Imran 11, Zohaib 10 and Hamza 31. Syed Tajamul Alvi captured three
wickets for 30. Sadat took two for 20. Safwat and Sheharyar had one each for 23 and 10
The losers replied with 110 for 7. Amongst the runs were Saad 30, Safaat 24, Sadat 12 and
Iftikhar 10. Maaz got three wickets for 15. Saad bagged two for 10. One each went to Hamza
and Hassan for 10 and 22 runs. In the second, BIES beat them again but this time by two
wickets. The losing side made 128 for 5. Hamza 30 and Imran 16 were the not out batsmen.
The other contributors were Hassan 18, Taha 16, Saad 11 and Afridi 10. Saad claimed two
victims for 19. Iftikhar and Alvi had one each for 20 and 16 runs. In reply, the winning
boys crossed the target of 129 for the loss of eight wickets. Their run getters were Alvi
31, Sadat 30 and Sasath 10. Zohaib captured three wickets for 25 and Maaz got two for 22.
Saad and Hassan picked up one each for 26 and 25 runs.
To create enthusiasm amongst the boys, CPCA courtesy of SHB then put up a trophy for a
challenge match. Here, Manarat restored some honor when they beat the BIES by 38 runs and
walked away with the top prize. Batting first after winning the toss, the victorious team
scored 148 for 7. Minarat school team played with only 7 players. Contributing to
the runs were Imran 45, Shiraz 38, Saad 21, Hassan 16 and Abdullah 10. Nasir took three
wickets for 37. Alvi and Sadat each got two for 20 and 25 runs. Going for the winning
mark, BIES were all out for 110. Safwat was their highest scorer on 21. The other runs
makers were Nasir 12, Sadat 11 and Alvi 10. Shiraz grabbed three wickets for 21. Two each
went to Saad and Abdullah for 27 and 15 runs. All the CPCA executive management committee
members led by Wilfrid A. Paes were present at the awarding ceremony. Amongst the other
guests were Dr. Ali Sheikh BIES principal and Nasir Ali Khan. The best-of-three
series trophy was presented to the skipper Alvi of the BIES team by Asif Saleem. For the
Challenge match, captain Hassan Wahid of Manarat received the cup from the CPCA president,
Wilfrid A. Paes.
In his concluding speech, Paes advised the promising youngsters to gear up from now for
the major Inter School tournament during the third week of January 2000. All the
preparations are in full swing, he concluded amidst loud cheers.
