RIYADH, Dec. 7 – The teams of Carrier and Al Qusi International emerged the respective champions of the Winners and the Losers Groups in the recently concluded 20-overs Burger King trophy cricket tournament, which was organized by Central Province Cricket Association (CPCA).
In the Winners Group final, Carrier survived in a nail biting finish over the Pakistan International Airlines (PIA) to win by a solitary run. The victors batted first after winning the toss and made 181 for 8. Zulfiqar was their highest scorer with 40.
The others were Fayyaz Hussain 35, Arshad 31, Asim 22 and Bakhtiar 17. Abdul Razzaq captured three wickets for 36 runs. Saleem took two for 31. One each went to Bilal and Khalid for 19 and 23 runs.
In reply, Razzak and Noman led the fight back for PIA and very nearly they did succeed but it was not their day. Razzak who had a good day with the ball, cracked valuable 56 while Noman contributed with gallant 46. Of the others, Khalid made 18 and Manzoor was caught for 16. Asif and Bakhtair took one wicket each for 24 and 49 runs for the new champions. The man of the match honor went to Hussain, said Abu Fahim while outlining the details.
In the first semifinal earlier, PIA defeated Huzaifa by five wickets. Carrier, in the second, demolished Saudi American Bank (SAMBA) by eight wickets. The latter batted first and made 146 all out. The winners achieved this target for the loss of two wickets. Here, Kashif hit fine 64 and Zulfiqar added useful 36. The not out batsmen were Arshad 16 and Hussain 12.
On the other side, in the Losers Group final, Qusi recorded a 34-runs victory over the Young Star to clinch the honor here. Opting to bat after winning the toss, Qusi scored 267 for 3. The highlight of their innings was a century by Amila D’Souza who remained on 106 not out. In his classic batting firepower which was enjoyed by the Friday fans, he hit twelve sixes and four fours thus earning the man of the match honor as well.
Salman Khan 49, Tasneem 48, Adnan 22 and Shamsuddin 13 not out were also amongst the runs. For Young Star, Faisal claimed two victims for 38 and Asif Mirza had one for 39 runs.
Going for the target, the losers could just put on 233 for 7 in the allotted overs. Mirza played well for his 59. The other contributors were Rana Naeem 45, Paul 44, Asif Cheema 41 and Riaz 17. For the victorious side, Tasneem bagged three wickets for 52. Ashraf grabbed two for 37. Khan and Riaz Shah shared one each by giving away 37 and 46 runs.
Earlier in their semifinal clashes in this category, Qusi won easily over Saqib by six wickets while the Young Star eliminated Saudi Ericsson.
