FISH PAKORA

Ingredients

- 450g rohu or any other firm white fish fillets
- 2 tbsp. lemon juice
- 2 tsp. garlic paste
- 2 tsp. ginger paste
- 1 tsp ajowan (carum)
- 3-4 green chilli
- 1\2 level tsp ground turmeric
- 1 tsp. Red chili powder
- 1 level tsp. salt
- 1 tsp. ground Coriander

Basic batter
- 200 g. gram flour,  (besan)
-1 1\2 level tsp. salt
- 1 tsp. chilli powder
- 1 level tsp. ajowan seeds
- 1 level tsp. coriander crushed
- 1 tsp. garam masala
- 1\2 tsp. bicarbonate of soda
- - 2 tbs. Coriander leave
- 2-3 drops of yellow food color

- about 300 ml water
1. Wash the fish and pat dry. Cut into 1 inch pieces. Rub the fish with lemon juice and put aside. Mix the garlic, ginger paste with salt, chilli powder, turmeric, green chillies, ground coriander and ajowan. Smear the fish pieces with spice paste. Set aside for at least 2 hours.
2.Place the gram flour and the remaining dry ingredients and food colour in a bowl. Pour in the water gradually and beat to a smooth paste. The consistency should be like thick pancake batter. Leave aside to rest for 20 minutes.
3. Heat oil in a deep fryer or a karahai to smoking point, then reduce the heat to medium.
4. Dip a few pieces of fish into the batter to thoroughly coat them, then using your fingers lift them out of the batter and at once drop them into the hot oil. Be careful not to splash yourself with hot oil. Don't try to fry too many at a time. Fry for a few minutes, then carefully turn them over. Fry the pakoras for 3-5 minutes to a crisp golden colour on both sides, drain thoroughly with a perforated slice. Then place them on absorbent kitchen paper.

Nosebleed

Nosebleed can be scary, but it is rarely cause for alarm. Most nosebleeds are caused by zealous blowing or picking, or a blow during rough play. In the wintertime, especially, if your child's bed is near a heater, the membranes inside the nose can become dried and itchy, causing your child to pick at his nose and further irritate the nasal tissue.

What to Do:

  • Stay calm and reassure your child.

  • Sit the child upright in a chair or in your lap and have him tilt his head slightly forward. Gently pinch his nose (just below the bony ridge) shut with a tissue or a clean washcloth. Keep pressure on the nose for about 10 minutes; if you stop too soon, bleeding may start again. Ice wrapped in a paper towel applied to the nose may also help.

  • Do not have your child lean back. This may cause blood to flow down the back of the throat, which tastes bad and may initiate gagging, coughing, or vomiting.

  • Keep your child quiet for several hours following the nosebleed. Discourage blowing, picking, rubbing, and any rough play.

Here are some tips for preventing future nosebleeds:

  • To prevent picking, keep your child's nails short.
  • Following a nosebleed, discourage strenuous activity, which may increase pressure on blood vessels and start the bleeding again.
  • Keep the inside of your child's nose moist with saline nasal spray or dab Vaseline gently around the opening of the nostrils.
  • If the air in your home is dry, humidify your child's room with a vaporizer (be sure to keep the vaporizer clean to prevent mildew).

Call your doctor, or head for the emergency room, if:

  • your child gets a nosebleed as the result of a blow to the head or a fall
  • you are unable to stop the nosebleed
  • nosebleeds are frequent, or they last longer than 15 minutes
  • your child has difficulty breathing
  • there is bleeding from another place, such as the gums
  • your child has just started taking new medicine
  • there is a foreign body stuck in your child's nose

BALOCHISTAN

Balochistan is the largest province of Pakistan with an area about 343,000 square km. Although it is bigger than the British Isles, Its population is only about one million. This is perhaps due to its tough terrain and scarcity of water. To its south is Arabian Sea, to its west-Iran, and is almost entirely desert with low, dry hills rising from 300 meters to 2500 meters in the north. To its west, in the proximity of Iran, to its north is Afghanistan. It also shares boundaries with the provinces of Punjab, Sind and NWFP. Makran- an important coastal town of Balochistan more expansive desert plains reign supreme. This is where the Chagai and Toba Kakar Mountain Ranges form the borders of Iran, Afghanistan and Pakistan.
In winter the temperature falls to as low as - 30 Celsius while in summer it ranges from 18 to 30 C. One of the oldest Neolithic sites (6000 BC) is to be found at Mehr Ghar just south of
Bolan Pass. This culture faded away in 3000 BC about the same time that the Indus Valley Civilization emerged.

Commercial point in Tiz with 'great warehouses, palm groves and a beautiful mosque, with people of all nations', simply dried up. From Balochistan passes the rout of the Euro-Asian Highway- from Zahedan in Iran to Taftan in Balochistan and on to Quetta. Another alternative road turns south from Kan-dahar in Afghanistan into Chaman in Balochistan - this was the route for Freight bound for Afghanistan arriving through Karachi harbor. Apart from its importance as a transit area, there are mineral resources, which are just beginning to be tapped. The Sui district has one of the largest gas deposits in the world. Balochistan is a province of contrasts. It has some of the bleakest landscape in the country with grim, jagged mountains, barren and arid land where the sparse greenery shrivels and wilts, but hidden away are some stunningly beautiful places.
Balochistan never became part of the Moghul Empire, and effectively remained an autonomous frontier tributary. Makran, once a thriving region with its capital in Panjgur.

Not many people know that Quetta, the capital of Balochistan, is considered as Mecca for gliding enthusiasts. The Climatic conditions are such that from June till September, warm air currents, also known as thermals, rise up from the Quetta valley to great heights. This phenomenon offers excellent conditions for gliding and soaring. It may surprise many that Quetta Flying Club is in existence since early 1960s. Flying for upto 9 hours, non-stop, and distances flown in excess of 200 kms. are common.

About 80 kms. north-east of Quetta is the famous town of Ziarat, a place where the father of the nation spent his last days. Ziarat boasts of Juniper forest one of its kind in the world. Some trees have ages in excess of thousand years. In winters, the rolling hills with the carpet of Juniper forests and snow claded tops present beautiful scenic view.

Headaches (Sir ka Dard)
An Article by Dr. Rakhshanda Alam, Riyadh
Our female members can ask any medical related question Click here

This is the most commonly presented complaint in general practice. There may be thousands of causes but for our convenience we will consider the most common types. Broadly speaking we can divide headache into two types.

Acute Headache

Chronic Headache

Acute Headache

Causes of new episodes are beyond our scope if you have acute attacks of  headache again and again consult your GP. It could be (commonly)

1) Migraine

2) Cluster

3) Exertion headache

4)Trigeminal neuralgia

Migraine

Signs & Symptoms
There are flashes of light in front of eyes patient may have difficulty in seeing the objects.  Patient may feel nausea or have vomiting; there may be a dislike for light. There is throbbing headache on one side of head (WHICH IS THE MOST COMMON) or rarely on both sides. The routine life of patient is interfered by the intense pulsating headache.

Triggering Factors

Stress, Excitement, Foods (chocolate, citrus fruits, caffeine, nuts and dry fruits), oversleeping, hunger, exertion and menstruation

Treatment

General Measures

1) Avoid triggering factors

2) Take the first sign as alarming sign and take rest in a quiet, dark room. Try to sleep if possible

3) Try re-breathing into a paper bag, this sometimes stops the attack at the start

4) Take two tablets of soluble aspirin (if no complaints of ulcer) OR two tablets of Paracetamol. Also take one tablet anathematic like Stametil OR Primpron OR Largectil etc.

5) If patient is taking ORAL CONTRACEPTIVES she should stop taking those pills and consult doctor for other method of contraception.

DO NOT SELF MEDICATE YOURSELF, ALWAYS CONSULT YOUR DOCTOR BEFORE TAKING ANY MEDICINE

Cluster Headache

It can occur at any age but children rarely have it .Males are affected five times more than females .Smokers are the most common presenters. There are clusters of headache which are focused around one eye. The eye becomes red and watery. Trigeminal Neuralgia

IT is severe and intense episode of pain in the area of trigeminal nerve that is severe stabbing sort of pain occurs in front of cheek   (maxillary),side of face (mandibular) and most severely around eye (ophthalmic). It can occur at any age but is common  in  older age  groups e.g. 50 years. It is more in males than in females. pain is severe in nature, it can occur many times a day and may be aggravated  by Movement of face (eating, talking, laughing). Even touching the skin can provoke an attack.

Treatment

The patient should be seen by the Specialist doctor as there may be any sensory or motor deficit patients under 50 years should also be seen by a specialist doctor if drugs fail there may be surgical treatment needed.

Chronic Headache

Chronic headaches are generally grouped as;
Tension Headache

It is a very common cause of headache .it is associated with Stress and Anxiety. The pain starts slowly but once it starts it becomes severe and it is present all day. This type of pain is a regular visitor for weeks to years. Usually due to its intensity sleep is disturbed. Because of lack of sleep there is increased headache and so the vicious cycle goes on. Pain is usually on both sides and patient usually describes it as A TIGHT BAND AROUND MY HEAD. Skin over the skull (scalp) is usually tender. The pain may be felt at the back of the head as well.

Treatment

STRESS should be avoided. Measures should be taken to alleviate stress e.g. exercise, assage, relaxation tapes. Analgesic use in cluster headache is limited as it can cause increased headache in patients.

Analgesic Headache

OVERUSE of analgesics, in Migraine or Tension headache can cause HEADACHE.Three times more in females than in  males.  Those people who take too much of pain killers or sleeping pills should be aware of this condition. NEVER TAKE ANY MEDICINE WITHOUT PRESCRIPTION BY A DOCTOR.

The Man of Tolerance!

He was kind. He was honest. He was polite, as well as cheerful. He used to be respected by one and all in the town. But now, in a matter of days, everything had changed dramatically. Currently, he was a liar and a madman to almost everyone in the town. He was being branded as a sorcerer and a poet.

He was ridiculed wherever he went. People all around jeered at him, whenever he spoke. The riffraff of the town insulted and mocked him. Even his own relatives abused him with foul words. However, he tolerated all this with patience and continued his mission with an unshakeable conviction. Never did he reply with a word of contempt. Instead, he prayed to Allah to guide his persecutors to the right path.

He was Prophet Muhammad (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him), whose patience and tolerance has no match in the history. The pagans of Makkah had left no stone unturned in the persecution of the Prophet (p.b.u.h.) and his followers. They used to throw stones, filth and refuse at his house. Thorns were spread on the way he had to pass at night, wounding his feet, and all that Prophet Muhammad (p.b.u.h.) would do was to remove them.

The Prophet’s (p.b.u.h.) followers in general were tortured in the most brutal ways so that others would not dare to join the new faith. Poorer Muslims like Bilal (may Allah be pleased with him) were made to lie down on burning sand under the blistering heat of the noontime sun, and heavy rocks were placed on their chests so that they could not move. The Quraish would also place ropes around their necks and drag them in the streets. Even those from wealthier families like Usman Ghani (may Allah be pleased with him) were beaten mercilessly and thrashed most cruelly, while tied, without food and water. The only choice the pagans gave them was idolatry or death. However, the forbearance, tolerance as well as the forgiveness of those Muslims has no parallel in the history of humankind as, eighteen years later when the Muslims conquered Makkah, not a single pagan was persecuted, or any house looted.

Today while enjoying the luxuries of life – living in air-conditioned homes, wearing fashionable outfits, traveling in automobiles, sleeping on mattresses, and feeding on the diet of our choice – most of us cannot even imagine the hardships bore by Prophet Muhammad (p.b.u.h.) and his companions. Undoubtedly, the tolerance they exhibited is far superior to the patience we possess.

The difference is due to the fact that they feared Allah, whereas, we have forgotten His Message. Allah says in the Holy Quran:

“Tolerate patiently what (they) say and part from them in a polite manner.” (73:10)

We cannot bear a harsh word of our Muslim brother, yet our Prophet (p.b.u.h.) would pray for the unbeliever who cursed him. We cannot stand a taunt made by our colleague, yet our Prophet (p.b.u.h.) bore the ridicule of the pagans of Makkah. We demand revenge for every trouble created by our friends, yet our Prophet (p.b.u.h.) forgave his enemies who had abused him for more than ten years. While insisting on taking revenge, we neglect another decree of the Holy Quran, which says:

“Practise forgiveness, command decency and avoid ignorant people.” (7:199)

Tolerance, patience and forgiveness cannot be observed when we are angry. Yet this is the time when the need to observe tolerance and patience is most. Thus, anger must be controlled.

Anger is a human instinct and cannot be eliminated. Every one of us feels angry at some time or the other, mostly due to our fellow beings’ actions, but it is how we exhibit our anger that makes the difference. We can either tolerate it patiently and forgive the person who caused the anger (earning Allah’s pleasure), or react violently with foul words (which most of us do) and exchange blows. However, if we think coolly, the latter choice only leads to impairment.

Anger is a destabilizing emotion. It takes away the ability of judgment, sensible thinking and can lead to depression and wrong actions. During anger, one can hurt the other person (who could be a friend, too) verbally or even, physically. An angry person cannot differentiate between friend and foe, right and wrong. His intellect and power to reason are disabled, and things he would not do in a normal state, become acceptable. Anger is also hard to control and that is why the Prophet (p.b.u.h.) described the person who could control his anger as more stronger than a seasoned wrestler.

Restraining anger and observing tolerance not only benefits one’s self at that moment, but is also counted as a ‘hasanah’ (a good deed) and is rewarded by Allah, as Prophet Muhammad (p.b.u.h.) has said:

“Every good action is a charity and it is a good action to meet a friend with a smiling face.” (Bukhari)

Similarly, every sinful action is also compensated for, and anger is surely disliked by Allah. In this regard, we should draw lesson from the Prophet (p.b.u.h.) and his companions – how they tolerated the cunning disbelievers and their shrewd mischief. Here, living in an Islamic country, we usually have to tolerate our Muslim brothers and sisters. If we do not even do that, we would be renouncing another of Allah’s orders mentioned in the Holy Quran, which says:

“Believers are but brothers, so set things right between your brothers and observe your duty to Allah so that you may obtain mercy.” (49:9)
