Drug for deadly prostate cancer
Prostate cancer cell

We believe we have made a major step forward in the treatment of end-stage prostate cancer patients
Dr Johann de Bono
Institute of Cancer Research

Scientists are hailing a new drug to treat aggressive prostate cancer as potentially the most significant advance in the field for 70 years.
Abiraterone could potentially treat up to 80% of patients with a deadly form of the disease resistant to currently available chemotherapy, they say.  The drug works by blocking the hormones which fuel the cancer.
The Institute of Cancer Research hopes a simple pill form will be available in two to three years.
An advanced clinical trial involving 1,200 patients around the world is currently under way, with more trials likely later this year.
Prostate cancer is the most common cancer among men. It is estimated that up to 10,000 men a year in the UK are diagnosed with the most aggressive - and almost always lethal - form of prostate cancer. It had been assumed that the cancer was driven by sex hormones such as testosterone produced in the testicles.
Current treatments work by stopping the testicles from producing testosterone.

New action

However, experts have now discovered that the cancer can feed on sex hormones from all sources, including supplies of the hormone produced by the tumour itself.
Abiraterone works by blocking production of the hormones throughout the body.
The latest study, published in the Journal of Clinical Oncology, is based on just 21 patients with advanced, aggressive prostate cancer treated with the drug - but data has been collected on a total of 250 worldwide. It found significant tumour shrinkage, and a drop in tell-tale levels of a key protein produced by the cancer called prostate specific antigen in the majority of patients.
Many of the patients, who have been monitored for up to two-and-a-half years, have reported a significant improvement in the quality of their lives.
Some were able to stop taking morphine for the relief of pain caused by the spread of the disease to their bones.

Real hope
Lead researcher Dr Johann de Bono said the findings needed to be confirmed in larger trials.
But he said: "We believe we have made a major step forward in the treatment of end-stage prostate cancer patients.
"These men have very aggressive prostate cancer which is exceptionally difficult to treat and almost always proves to be fatal. "We hope that abiraterone will eventually offer them real hope of an effective way of managing their condition and prolonging their lives."
It is hoped the drug will also aid other cancer patients, including those with breast cancer.
Professor David Webb, an expert in clinical pharmacology at the University of Edinburgh, said: "This agent clearly looks promising, but it is still at the early stages of clinical development.
"It will be crucial to look carefully at the balance between its benefits and harms, before drawing firm conclusions about the usefulness of this new drug. "Important side effects often only emerge with the larger clinical studies that now need to be done."
John Neate, of The Prostate Cancer Charity, said: "This is an exciting development which has been eagerly anticipated."

1. Compare prices online: Instead of running around town hunting for bargains, use your computer to compare prices and products before you buy. You may be able to get the best price by purchasing online--but watch out for shopping and handing charges that can ruin your bargain. You may get changed sales tax by some merchants and not by others. Some merchants charge more for shipping and handing then others, so watch out.
2. Shopping Online for local attractions can be another big savings place for you. Many of your local attractions now have ticket sales available online. Disney and Six Flags have sales going on with online tickets. If you buy online, your gonna save some big Bucks. Depending on where your going this summer, you can find some impressive discounts online.
3. Use a secure browser. This is the software you use to navigate the Internet. Your browser should comply with industry security standards, such as Secure Sockets Layer (SSL). These standards scramble the purchase information you send over the Internet, helping to secure your transaction.
4. Shop with merchants you know. Anyone can set up a shop online under almost any name. If you’re not familiar with a merchant. Determine the merchant refund and return policies before you place your order, also is there is a restocking fee. These should be posted on the company’s Web site, also Look for an online privacy policy.
5. Read the customer comments and ratings on the merchants before you order from your merchant. If one merchant charges a little more money and has 200 good ratings on service and another merchant has five good ratings on service and has a lower price, you safer ordering from the merchant with 200 good rating.

Dear Sir,
During the last couple of month "Name omitted" has arranged variety programs for Pakistani community. In one of such event it was mentioned that this program is in association with Contact Pakistan. I have the following reservations from both the programs that I considered had your seal of trust. The later part of this email is omitted in the greater interest of our community in KSA.

Dear Bhai, Contact Pakistan and its team has no association with any of the local organization unless otherwise advised by Contact Pakistan. Being a good CP community member we expect our members to follow our publications and notifications rather believing what they hear from others. If we will associate with any of the organization worldwide, we will be the first one to announce. So in future, do not trust anyone unless you hear from CP itself. We have indicated this in a notification to our community in the past when some individuals were collecting charity using CP name quoting that Contact Pakistan is supporting the cause.
Unless you hear from us, do not believe or trust. We thank you for bringing this matter to us. We have no right to comment on what others are doing, if you did not like it then there was no reason to go again!

For the greater benefit of our community, if you like to share your shopping experience with rest of us then do send  your views, comments or complaints to - CP KSA would love to publish your views so others could benefit.

 What to Read ..
So dear friends, enjoying your summer vacations! As I said earlier too, don’t just kill your time but try to avail it in a benefiting manner.
Reading is a good pastime. I really encourage you young folks out there with a lot of free time to spend in summers vacations, to read. It is a good habit with many benefits. It broadens the reader’s vision and opens his mind to new ideas. Many students often complain about their lack of ability to produce pieces of their own good writings. For all such fellows, this is the time…go ahead…grab couple of good books and read. Reading also reading pours more words into your brain thus increasing your vocabulary. It enhances your ability to express yourself in a better way. It adds to self confidence because it boosts reader’s general knowledge. Scientific researches have also shown that reading helps keep our memory and reasoning abilities intact as we age.
But while I stress on the reading habit, it is equally important to be careful with the selection of reading material. What you watch, read, and talk about affects the way you, yourself, feel and think. Newspapers carry a lot of stuff. Some of the people just read news about wars, murders, robberies, woes and misery that’s happening in the world. These stories are deliberately set in such a manner so as to excite the reader and pique his curiosity. But all the bad news read has bad effect on the spirit. Similarly, reading books, with good moral values, have positive effect on the reader’s character.
Our above discussion can be beautifully summed up in one of the quote by Sir Francis Bacon. This famous scholar said, “Some books are to be tasted, others to be swallowed, and some few to be chewed and digested.” It means that some books are to be read only in parts, others to be read-say just for the sake of reading, and some few to be read wholly, and with attentiveness and interest.
So friends, now pick up a good book and get on with it because reading makes you smarter, and the more reading you do the better.
Till next time, Happy Reading…

Ms. Amna Tariq Holy City of Makkah-Ul-Mukarrama
