Champaign
Fruit Punch |
|
- 1 (900 ml)
bottled Apple juice
- 1 (900 ml) bottled White grapes juice
- 1 bottle (750ml) any sparkling spring water. I use
Perrier.
- One Apple. Half diced
(not pealed) and other half pealed and grated.
- One Orange diced.
- Six Strawberries, chopped.
- Juice from one large Lemon.
- 10-15 Mint leaves washed thoroughly. Very finely chopped.
- Ice cubes enough to keep the punch bowel chilled. Do not
put any ice inside the drink.
A well known drink but my recipe slightly
differs from what you get in the restaurants. This drink can
be served on cocktail parties and also goes very well with
special dinners. Server it with cocktail snacks or with main
course at the dinner table. Remember it is a special drink
so needs to be served in special Champaign glasses from your
Crystal ware collection. The recipe is to make a full punch
bowel enough for 12 adults.
Preparation
All the juices and water needs to be kept in the
Refrigerator till the time required for preparation. Add
Lemon juice and chopped mint leaves in a mixing bowl. Use a
spoon to whisk it for like 5 minutes. Pour this mixture in
the punch bowl. Add diced and grated Apple, Orange and
chopped Strawberries. Pour Apple and Grapes juice. Do not
open the bottle of the sparkling water till you are ready to
serve. Now keep this mixture in the Refrigerator for at
least two hours. The best way to serve this drink is to hold
the punch bowl with Ice cubes. I do it by putting the punch
in a basket that is full of Ice cubes. If this sort of
arrangement is not possible for you then keep the drink and
the water bottle in your freezer for at least 1 hour. Do not
put ice in the drink it will ruin the flavour of the drink.
At the time of serving get them out and pour the sparkling
water into the already made mixture of juices, stir and
serve

Next time you take the hair from
your hairbrush, don’t throw it away; sprinkle it over your
lawn and the birds will pick it up and use it to reinforce
their nests.

What is depression?
|
Anyone can
suffer from depression. The most common symptoms
include:
-
Feelings
of helplessness and hopelessness
-
Feeling
useless, inadequate, bad
-
A sense of
self hatred, constant questioning of thoughts
and actions and a constant need for reassurance
-
Feeling
vulnerable and being oversensitive to criticism
-
Sense of
guilt
-
Loss of
energy and the ability to concentrate and be
motivated to do even the simplest tasks
-
Harming
oneself
-
Sudden
loss or gain in weight
-
Sleep
disruption or a need to sleep very long hours
-
Agitation
and restlessness
-
Loss of
libido
-
Physical
aches and pains
Most people
only suffer two or three of these symptoms at any
one time. People with severe depression may also
experience suicidal feelings, stop eating or
drinking and suffer from delusions or
hallucinations. Many people who need treatment for
depression suffer further bouts later in life. Women
are twice as likely to suffer from depression, but
three times as many men commit suicide. Experts say
this could be because women are more likely to admit
to depression because of the stigma attached to
mental illness.
Different types of depression There are many
different types of depression, including clinically
diagnosed depression, manic depression and
post-natal depression. Manic depression is marked by
extreme mood swings, between highs when a person
experiences excessive energy and optimism and lows
when they may feel total despair and lack of energy.
It is often treated with lithium or, in extreme
cases, electro-convulsive therapy. Post-natal
depression can occur from about two weeks after the
birth of a child to two years after and differs from
the mood swings suffered by many in the first few
days after the child is born. Other forms of
depression include Seasonal Affective Disorder which
is thought to be associated with the approach of
winter and may be linked to lack of sunlight.
Causes of depression Depression can be caused by
a combination of factors. It often runs in families,
suggesting a genetic component, but it may be
triggered by stressful events. Major depressive
illness is usually linked to some form of chemical
imbalance in the brain.
It is also thought that people with low self-esteem,
a pessimistic outloook on life and difficulty coping
with stress are more prone to depression.
Life events which may trigger depression include
bereavement, chronic illness, relationship problems
and financial difficulties. Treatment
In recent years, the market has been saturated by a
range of new drugs called anti-depressants. These
include Prozac which is thought to stimulate the
growth of brain cells in an area of the brain called
the dentate gyrus. Other types of drugs may also be
used to treat depression. Many positive claims have
been made for anti-depressants, but some patients
experience bad side effects. Other ways of treating
depression include psychotherapy, which aims to
uncover the reasons for depression and help the
patient to find ways of overcoming them. Self help
groups may also offer people a forum for talking
about their condition and sharing it with others so
that they do not feel isolated and alone. In extreme
cases, a person with depression may need to be
treated in hospital, for example, if they are
threatening or have attempted to commit suicide. If
the person is deemed a risk to himself or others, he
may have to be committed to hospital. Besides
psychotherapy and a course of anti-psychotic drugs,
people in hospital may be offered or forced to
undergo electro-convulsive therapy. This involves
applying electric currents to the brain. The
treatment is controversial, but safety procedures
have been improved in recent years. Some
psychiatrists are against its use, particularly
without the patient's consent, but others believe it
can be effective in dealing with life-threatening
depression.

Space Telescope will change our view about The Universe |

The Universe is home to numerous
exotic and beautiful phenomena, some of which can
generate almost inconceivable amounts of energy.
Supermassive black holes, merging neutron stars,
streams of hot gas moving close to the speed of
light ... these are but a few of the marvels that
generate gamma-ray radiation, the most energetic
form of radiation, billions of times more energetic
than the type of light visible to our eyes. What is
happening to produce this much energy? What happens
to the surrounding environment near these phenomena?
How will studying these energetic objects add to our
understanding of the very nature of the Universe and
how it behaves?
The Gamma-ray Large Area Space Telescope (GLAST)
will open this high-energy world to exploration and
help us to answer these questions. With GLAST,
astronomers will at long last have a superior tool
to study how black holes, notorious for pulling
matter in, can accelerate jets of gas outward at
fantastic speeds. Physicists will be able to study
subatomic particles at energies far greater than
those seen in ground-based particle accelerators.
And cosmologists will gain valuable information
about the birth and early evolution of the Universe.
For this unique endeavor, one that brings together
the astrophysics and particle physics communities,
NASA is teaming up
with the U.S.
Department of Energy and institutions in France,
Germany, Japan, Italy and Sweden.
General Dynamics was chosen to build the
spacecraft. GLAST was launched June 11, 2008 at
12:05 pm EDT.
Mission Objectives
- Explore the most extreme
environments in the Universe, where nature
harnesses energies far beyond anything possible
on Earth.
- Search for signs of new laws
of physics and what composes the mysterious Dark
Matter.
- Explain how black holes
accelerate immense jets of material to nearly
light speed.
- Help crack the mysteries of
the stupendously powerful explosions known as
gamma-ray bursts.
- Answer long-standing
questions across a broad range of topics,
including solar flares, pulsars and the origin
of cosmic rays.

UAE
Hikes Fees for Visit Visas |
K.T. Abdurabb, Arab News
ABU DHABI, 9 June 2008 — The price of visit visas to the UAE
is to be increased from 100 dirhams to 500 dirhams beginning
Aug. 1, a senior official announced yesterday. “Visit visas
valid for 30 days will cost 500 dirhams. This cannot be
renewed. A visitor wishing to stay for an extended period
must obtain a visit visa valid for 90 days that costs 1,000
dirhams,” said Lt. Gen. Mohammad Salem Al-Khaili, director
general of the Federal Naturalization and Residency
Department (FNRD). Al-Khaili also added that multiple entry
visas are valid for six months from the date of issuance and
allow visitors to remain in the country for 14 days at a
stretch.
“A person who wants to undergo treatment must take a visa
for treatment. This visa costs 1,000 dirhams and the
duration is 90 days,” he added. People wishing to get
student visas, which cost 1,000 dirhams, must be registered
at one of the UAE universities, obtain health insurance and
place a refundable deposit of 1,000 dirhams. Student visas
can be renewed for a similar period at a cost of 500 dirhams.
One-month tourist visas cost 100 dirhams.
However, citizens of the United States, Canada, Australia,
New Zealand, Japan, Brunei, Singapore, Malaysia, the UK,
France, Italy, Germany, the Netherlands, Belgium,
Luxembourg, Switzerland, Austria, Sweden, Norway, Denmark,
Portugal, Ireland, Greece, Cyprus, Finland, Malta, Spain,
Monaco, Vatican, Iceland, Andorra, San Marino, Liechtenstein
and Hong Kong can obtain a 60-day visit visa free of charge
upon arrival.
The Naturalization Department also introduced a new visa,
Mission Visa, which is issued for the purpose of temporary
work in the country. It is issued for a maximum of 180 days
with a combined fee of 1,800 dirhams. It is issued for three
months against a fee of 600 dirhams and can be renewed for
another three months against a fee of 1,200 dirhams. It has
been introduced to facilitate the Labor Ministry’s temporary
work permit. An applicant must obtain the permit from the
Labor Ministry first to get the visa.
Meanwhile, Labor Ministry officials said that six-month and
one-year labor bans have been reinstated. All expatriate
employees in the UAE face an automatic six-month ban if they
cancel their employment visa or quit their jobs.
“If the former employer issues a no-objection certificate,
there won’t be a ban,” said a Labor Ministry official.
However, the six-month ban does not apply to government
departments or free zones.

Don't Let the Devil Leave His Bags Behind
Assalam-O-Aliakum!
Friends, in one of our recent article we talked about how a
devil makes us slave him. Sometimes we successfully do
overcome the devilish powers but some of its marks stay
behind. It is like we kick out the devil but not his
belongings. There are many manifestations of this.
When one gets out of a bad habit or addiction, but still
longs to try it just one more time, he/she is actually
letting the devil leave his bags.
When someone runs out of money because of his imprudent
spending on luxuries, luckily gets over the financial
crises, but doesn’t learn from the experience and still
yearn to spend on frivolous things, he is letting the devil
leave behind his bags.
To forgive and forget is a good habit but a least practiced
one. When a person gets in dispute with someone; he may get
over it but still feel aggrieved and angry. This way he is
allowing the devil leave behind his bags.
Sometimes, one is able to root out a bad habit in him. But
then repeats it again saying that it is just for one more
time, it means the devil and his baggage has not been thrown
out completely. On the first day of every New Year, many of
us make resolutions. Most promise themselves that they will
not lie. They do stick to their resolution but then a
situation comes where they feel weak and lie saying that
they are just doing it for now and then this continues and
they keep lying.
Fellows, we have to keep battling our struggle with the
devil. The devil can never be happy when Allah’s wisest
creation-man turns to Allah and become His obedient
follower. The devil keeps using his tactics to get us off
from the right track. But by conscious efforts we can ward
off these attempts of devil.
Friends, don’t let the devil ploy you. Keep seeking Allah’s
forgiveness and He will bless you in His infinite Mercy.
Allah Hafiz
