- 50 g Sugar
- 50 g dark
soft brown sugar
- finely grated rind and juice of
half lemon
- 1 tbsp flour
- 15-25 g Butter
- Pinch of freshly grate nutmeg
-1.25ml ground cinnamon
- 50 g. sultanas
- finely grated rind and juice of half orange
To Finish:
- Caster sugar for sprinkling.
For Short crust Pastry
- 340g plain
flour
- pinch of salt
- 150g.
butter chilled and diced
1.
Roll out two thirds of the pastry on a lightly
floured work
surface and use to line a 23 cm (9 inch) pie dish. Chill in
the refrigerator for 30 minutes together with the remaining
dough wrapped in cling film. Meanwhile to make the filling,
peel quarter and core the apples. Slice them thickly into a
bowl of cold water to which lemon juice has already been
added.
2. Mix the sugar, flour, nutmeg,
cinnamon, lemon and orange rinds together and sprinkle a
little of this onto the pastry lining.
3. Cover the base of the pastry
lining with half the sliced apples, then sprinkle with half
the sultanas and half the remaining sugar mixture. Repeat
using all the apples, sultanas and sugar. Sprinkle the fruit
with orange juice and dot with butter.
4. Roll out the remaining pastry and
use it to cover the pie. Sealing the edges well. Slash the top
twice to let steam escape.
5. Cut leaves and berries from the
pastry trimmings. Brush the top of the pie with water and
position the decorations. Dredge with caster sugar. Bake at
190c (375F) mark 5 for 35-40 minutes until the fruit is tender
and the top is golden brown. Serve warm with custard or cream.
For Short crust Pastry
1) Mix flour and salt together in a
bowl. Add the butter to the flour. Using your fingertips, run
the fat slightly into the flour until the mixture resembles
fine bread crumbs.
2) Add 45-60 ml chilled water
sprinkling it evenly over the surface.
3) Stir in with a round bladed knife until the mixture begins
to stick together in large lumps. With one hand collect the
dough mixture together to form a ball.
4) Knead lightly for a few seconds
to give a firm smooth dough. Do not over handle the dough.
Wrap in cling film or greaseproof paper and chill in the
refrigerator for about 30 minutes.

for three minutes. Then dip in chilled water for three
minutes. Dry under the fan till the extra moisture is removed
and then pack into airtight jars or sealed packets. Freeze and
use when peas are too costly. They will not spoil for 2 years.

HEALTH TIPS |
Avoid excessive
heat.
It can have a severe impact on the health of many elderly
persons. Staying indoors in air conditioned settings, not
overexerting yourself and drinking plenty of liquids, unless
restricted by your doctor, is advisable.
Tell your doctor if your hands always seem to be cold.
It might be a sign of an underactive thyroid (hypothyroidism).
One function of the thyroid gland is to regulate body
temperature. When it's not doing its job, the body becomes
tired and less tolerant of the cold. The signs of
hypothyroidism can be vague, so be sure to mention even mild
changes to your doctor.
Make your toothbrush easier to hold.
People with arthritis or other conditions that limit motion
may want to attach their toothbrush handle to their hand with
a wide elastic band, or enlarge it by strapping it to a
sponge, Styrofoam ball or similar object. People with limited
shoulder movement may find brushing easier if they lengthen
the handle of the brush by attaching a long piece of wood or
plastic. Electric toothbrushes are helpful to many.
Improve the circulation of blood to the feet.
Wear comfortable shoes that fit well. Foot width may increase
with age. Always have your feet measured before buying shoes.
The upper part of the shoes should be made of a soft, flexible
material to match the shape of your foot. Shoes made of
leather can reduce the possibility of skin irritations. Soles
should provide solid footing and not be slippery. Thick soles
lessen pressure on hard surfaces. Low-heeled shoes are more
comfortable, safer and less damaging than high-heeled shoes.

Nokia halts mobile fuel cell
plan |
The firm committed to fuel cells eight months
ago but has now said the sector is "not yet mature".
Nokia's Matti Naskali said the firm had not abandoned the
technology, saying: "Fuel-cell technology is promising and
Nokia continues to follow it closely."
A fuel cell can be re-filled like a lighter, rather than
charged.
A fuel cell would also allow longer talk and standby times and
increased power for power-hungry applications such as video.
In June 2004, Tero Ojanpera, head of Nokia's research centre,
demonstrated a headset that was powered by a small amount of
methanol.
The fuel cell combined the methanol with air to produce power.
At that time, Mr Ojanpera said the technology was "reasonably
mature" and he predicted that it would take less than two
years to bring products to market.
But Mr Naskali, research manager at Nokia Japan, said several
issues with the technology had dented the firm's enthusiasm.
Current air transportation rules prohibit the carrying of
methanol, which is flammable, on an aircraft without special
packaging.
Other firms including Motorola, Toshiba, Fujitsu, NEC and
Hitachi are also researching fuel cells for mobile phones and
portable computers.

MIRACLES OF BANANA
This is
interesting. After Reading THIS, you'll NEVER look at a banana
in the same way again.
Bananas. Containing three natural sugars - sucrose, fructose
and glucose combined with fiber, a banana gives an instant,
sustained and substantial boost of energy. Research has proven
that just two bananas provide enough energy for a strenuous
90-minute workout. No wonder the banana is the number one
fruit with the world's leading athletes. But energy isn't the
only way a banana can help us keep fit. It can also help
overcome or prevent a substantial number of illnesses and
conditions, making it a must to add to our daily diet.
Depression:
According to
a recent survey undertaken by MIND amongst people suffering
from depression, many felt much better after eating a banana.
This is because bananas contain tryptophan, a type of protein
that the body converts into serotonin, known to make you
relax, improve your mood and generally make you feel happier.
PMS:
Forget
the pills - eat a banana. The vitamin B6 it contains regulates
blood glucose levels, which can affect your mood.
Anemia:
High
in iron, bananas can stimulate the production of hemoglobin in
the blood and so helps in cases of anemia.
Blood Pressure: This unique tropical fruit is extremely high in potassium
yet low in salt, making it the perfect to beat blood pressure.
So much so, the US Food and Drug Administration have just
allowed the banana industry to make official claims for the
fruit's ability to reduce the risk of blood pressure and
stroke.
Brain
Power: 200 students at a Twickenham (Middlesex) school were helped
through their exams this year by eating bananas at breakfast,
break, and lunch in a bid to boost their brain power. Research
has shown that the potassium-packed fruit can assist learning
by making pupils more alert.
Constipation: High in fiber, including bananas in the diet can help
restore normal bowel action, helping to overcome the problem
without resorting to laxatives.
Hangovers: One of the quickest ways of curing a hangover is to make a
banana milkshake, sweetened with honey. The banana calms the
stomach and, with the help of the honey, builds up depleted
blood sugar levels, while the milk soothes and re-hydrates
your system.
Heartburn: Bananas have a natural antacid effect in the body, so if you
suffer from heartburn, try eating a banana for soothing
relief.
Morning Sickness: Snacking on bananas between meals helps to keep blood sugar
levels up and avoid morning sickness.
Mosquito bites: Before reaching for the insect bite cream, try rubbing the
affected area with the inside of a banana skin. Many people
find it amazingly successful at reducing swelling and
irritation.
Nerves:
Bananas are high in B vitamins that help calm the nervous
system. Overweight and at work? Studies at the
Institute of
Psychology in Austria found pressure at work leads to gorging
on comfort food like chocolate and crisps. Looking at 5,000
hospital patients, researchers found the most obese were more
likely to be in high-pressure jobs. The report concluded that,
to avoid panic-induced food cravings, we need to control our
blood sugar levels by snacking on high carbohydrate foods
every two hours to keep levels steady.
Ulcers: The banana is used as the dietary food against intestinal
disorders because of its soft texture and smoothness. It is
the only raw fruit that can be eaten without distress in
over-chronicler cases. It also neutralizes over-acidity and
reduces irritation by coating the lining of the stomach.
Temperature control: Many other cultures see bananas as a "cooling" fruit that
can lower both the physical and emotional temperature of
expectant mothers. In
Thailand, for
example, pregnant women eat bananas to ensure their baby is
born with
a cool temperature.
Seasonal Affective Disorder (SAD): Bananas can help SAD sufferers because they contain the
natural mood enhancer tryptophan.
Smoking: Bananas can also help people trying to give up smoking. The
B6 and B12 they contain, as well as the potassium and
magnesium found in them, help the body recover from the
effects of nicotine withdrawal.
Stress: Potassium is a vital mineral, which helps normalize the
heartbeat, sends oxygen to the brain and regulates your body's
water balance. When we are stressed, our metabolic rate rises,
thereby reducing our potassium levels. These can be rebalanced
with the help of a high-potassium banana snack.
Strokes:
According to research in "The New England Journal of
Medicine,” eating bananas as part of a regular diet can cut
the risk of death by strokes by as much as 40%!
Warts: Those keen on natural alternatives swear that if you want to
kill off a wart, take a piece of banana skin and place it on
the wart, with the yellow side out. Carefully hold the skin in
place with a plaster or surgical tape! So, a banana really is
a natural remedy for many ills. When you compare it to an
apple, it has four times the protein, twice the carbohydrate,
three times the phosphorus, five times the vitamin A and iron,
and twice the other vitamins and minerals. It is also rich in
potassium and is one of the best value foods around. So maybe
its time to change that well-known phrase so that we say, "A
banana a day keeps the doctor away!" |

Preserving Our
Identity
Assalam-O-Alikum!
Young ones how are you? Enjoying the spring season? It is
indeed the most favorite season because of the floral aromas
all around and the colorful stretches of flowers adoring the
gardens. The scenic beauty bewitches us. Isn’t it? Subhan-Allah!
About a week more to go before 23rd March 2005.23rd
March is celebrated as Yum-e-Pakistan. The day is celebrated
each year to remind us of ideology of
Pakistan –
two nation theory, the moving force behind the struggle for
our dear homeland, Pakistan. Muslims were a minority as
compared to Hindus in the Indo-Pak Subcontinent. Hindus,
whenever got a chance, would try by all means to bring harm to
the Muslims. The rights of Muslims were violated. A look on
history before partition shows this. When British rulers
divided the
province of
Bengal,
in early 1900s, the thus formed Eastern Bengal had clear
Muslim majority which gave Muslims a chance to establish their
government in the province and hence improve their falling
economical, social and educational conditions. This was an
intolerable sight for Hindus and due to their strong
opposition, British rulers, inspite of all the administration
ease that they were having with divided Bengal, had to call it
off. Many such incidents as these served as eye openers for
the Muslims of subcontinent. They voiced for their rights
from the platform of All India Muslim league. It was the 1937
elections and resulting congress rule that showed Muslims a
foretaste of what could come about if they were left to
Hindu's mercy after Britishers' departure. And then our
leaders and people together demanded for Pakistan. It was in
the annual meeting of Muslim league, held in famous Iqbal
Park, Lahore, on 23 March 1940 that a resolution was passed to
get a free homeland for Muslims. The able Muslim leadership
helped Muslims realize that they were not just a minority but
a nation because of their religious, cultural and political
identity, and had as much right to a homeland in the
subcontinent as the Hindus. Hence after a long, hard struggle,
finally Pakistan came into being in 1947, seven years after
passing of Pakistan resolution.
Since independence,
Pakistan and
India have been draggers drawn with each other. Both the
countries have fought many wars over the past years. It is
hearting to see the cordial relations developing between the
two countries now. Both the neighbors have suffered enough
loss because of the tense relations. The resources that could
have been spent on the betterment of the social, economical,
educational conditions of the citizens have been consumed up
in security issue which the two countries face because of
their unfriendly relations. Now to promote the friendly
relations, many delegations and star personalities have been
going across the great divide. However, it is also important
that we do not forget the two-nation theory. We must always
bear it in our mind that we are a separate nation, with our
own rich culture, heritage and religion. We should never
forget the realities that were involved in creation of
Pakistan. We shall allow no attack, or compromise for
anything, that hits directly at the very base of Pakistan
ideology. We are a peace loving nation that likes to be friend
with all countries in general and its neighbors in special.
Let us make it clear, for once and all, that Pakistani nation
hope and look forward to all relations that regard and respect
our separate identity- which was the prime reason for the
Pakistan struggle.
May Allah safeguard our country and enable us to value our
freedom. Ameen!
