Mother
of the noted journalist (and Bureau Chief in
Riyadh for Daily Jang-Karachi and reporter for Awaz -
Urdu Edition of Saudi Gazette) Ijaz Tahir Awan - passed
away peacefully in
Pakistan on 21st April 2008.May Allah rest her soul in peace, amen!! Also,
may Allah bestow upon her a choice exalted place in
Jannah, amen!!
- 1 kg. lamb
meat on the bone, cut into large pieces.
- 5 cloves
- 1large cinnamon stick
- 2 tsp. salt
- 1tbsp. ginger paste
- 1 tbsp. garlic paste
- 8 cups water
- 3 cups good quality
saila rice
- 3/4 cup cooking oil
- 1 large onion skinned
and thinly sliced
- 1 inch piece cinnamon
stick
- 6 cloves
- 8-10 green cardamoms
- 1 tsp. cumin
- 3-4 carrots, peeled
and grated
- 1\2 cup green raisins
- 1\2 cup pine nuts
Wash meat thoroughly under cold water tap.
Place the meat, cinnamon, cloves, salt, water, garlic and
ginger in a large heavy based sauce pan. Bring to boil and
skim off any scum that rises to the top. Reduce the heat,
cover and allow to boil gently for 40 to 45 minutes until
the meat is tender.
2. Meanwhile, put the rice in a sieve and wash it thoroughly
under running cold tap until the water runs clear. Soak in
plenty of water for 11\2 hours. Drain in a sieve and let it
stand for a minute or two.
3. Fry the nuts, raisins and carrots
separately in 2 tablespoons of oil in a small frying pan.
keep aside.
2. Heat oil in a large heavy based pan, add
the onion and while stirring frequently fry for 3-5 minutes.
Add cinnamon stick, cloves, green cardamoms,cumin, meat and 6 cups of stock, add water if
necessary to make 6 cups. Bring to boil and add the rice to
it. Carefully stir once. Cover and reduce the heat to medium
and cook for 7-10 minutes. Gently stir the rice. (Do not
stir to hard otherwise the rice will break.) Put a layer of
carrot, raisins and pine nuts on the top of the rice. Cover
with a tight fitting lid, reduce the heat to very low and
allow to cook for another 7 - 10 minutes until rice is
tender.
Fluff up the rice with a fork, then transfer
it into to a heated serving dish.
Serve with
Raita.
Boil potatoes faster
Peel and cut potatoes and boil them in water to which a
little vinegar is added . They will be done in no time and
will retain the texture as well.
A woman's diet
around the time of conception may influence the
gender of her baby, research suggests.
The study suggests a high calorie diet at this time
- and regular breakfasts - might increase the odds
of a boy.
The researchers say the modern trend to opt for low
calorie diets might explain why the proportion of
boys is falling in developed countries.
The study, by the Universities of Exeter and Oxford,
appears in the Royal Society journal Biological
Sciences.
The study focused on 740 first-time pregnant mothers
in the UK, who were asked to provide records of
their eating habits before and during the early
stages of pregnancy.
The researchers found 56% of women with the highest
energy intake around the time of conception had
boys, compared to just 45% among women with the
lowest energy intake.
Women who had sons were also more likely to have
eaten a higher quantity and wider range of
nutrients, including potassium, calcium and vitamins
C, E and B12.
They were also more likely to have eaten breakfast
cereals. Fewer boys
Over the last 40 years there has been a small but
consistent decline, of about one per 1,000 births
annually, in the proportion of boys being born in
industrialised countries, including the UK.
Previous research has also shown a reduction in the
average energy intake in the developed world, and
there is also evidence that more people now skip
breakfast. Scientists already know that in many
animals, more males are produced when a mother has
plentiful resources or is high ranking. The
phenomenon has been most extensively studied in
invertebrates, but is also seen in horses, cows and
some species of deer. The explanation is thought to
lie with the evolutionary drive to produce
descendants. Lead researcher Dr Fiona Mathews said:
"Potentially, males of most species can father more
offspring than females, but this can be strongly
influenced by the size or social status of the male,
with poor quality males failing to breed at all.
"Females, on the other hand, reproduce more
consistently.
"If a mother has plentiful resources then it can
make sense to invest in producing a son because he
is likely to produce more grandchildren than would a
daughter. "However, in leaner times having a
daughter is a safer bet."
Glucose levels
It is known from IVF research that high levels of
glucose encourage the growth and development of male
embryos while inhibiting female embryos. In humans,
skipping breakfast depresses glucose levels and so
may be interpreted by the body as indicating poor
environmental conditions and low food availability.
Dr Allan Pacey, an expert in fertility at the
University of Sheffield, said there was good
evidence that nature had subtle ways of changing the
sex ratio of a population in response to a variety
of circumstances. However, he said: "I would urge
women to not to start starving themselves in order
to try influence the sex of their baby.
"It has been observed in some animal studies that
even small changes in female diet can affect the
life long health of the offspring, so it is
important that the mother has appropriate nutrition
at the time of conception and throughout her
pregnancy."

America they didn't know what 'please'
meant, and in the USA they didn't know
what 'The rest of the World meant!

The
Greenhouse Effect
The term 'Greenhouse
Effect' is commonly used to describe the increase in the
Earth's average temperature that has been recorded over the
past 100 years.
However, without the 'natural greenhouse effect', life on
Earth would be very different to that seen today.
About 80-90% of
the Earth's natural greenhouse effect is due to water vapor,
a strong greenhouse gas. The remainder is due to carbon
dioxide, methane, and a few other minor gases.
It is the carbon dioxide concentration that is increasing,
due to the burning of fossil fuels (as well as from some
rainforest burning). This is the man-made portion of the
greenhouse effect, and it is believed by many scientists to
be responsible for the
global warming
of the last 150 years.
Don't Let the Devil Make Slave of You
Assalam-O-Aliakum!
Friends, hope you are all hale and hearty.
Friends, many a times we make a mistake or commit a sin. And
to cover it, we keep committing more. We do feel guilty but
we keep transgressing without repenting and seeking
forgiveness of Allah Almighty who is the most Merciful. This
time I would like to share such a story with you that shows
how we keep being slaved by Devil till we don’t seek Allah’s
forgiveness.
There was a little boy David and his sister Sandra who were
visiting their grandparents who lived in a farm. David was
given a slingshot to play with, but only in the woods. He
practiced in the woods, but he could never hit the target.
One day he saw his granny’s pet duck. Just out of impulse,
he let the slingshot fly. Lo and behold…to his utter shock
it hit the duck right in its head, and killed it. In a
panic, while he was hiding the duck, he saw Sandra had seen
all! But she said nothing. After dinner that night Grandma
asked Sandra to do the washing but she said, "Grandma, David
told me he wanted to help in the kitchen." Then she
whispered to him, "Remember the duck?" So David did the
washing. Next day, Grandpa asked if the children wanted to
go fishing. Grandma said, "I'm sorry but I need Sandra to
help make dinner." Sandra again used the same trick and made
David stay behind to help grandma.
For several days David did both his chores and his sister’s.
Finally he couldn't stand it any longer and went to grandma
to confess that he had killed the duck.
Grandma gave him a hug, and said, "Sweetheart, I know. I
had watched the whole thing, but because I love you, I
forgave you. I was just wondering how long you would let
Sandra make a slave of you."
Friends, none of us can claim to be innocent for we commit
sins like lying, cheating. We have many bad habits in us.
The devil keeps throwing it up in our face and we keep being
slave to him. We shall realize that Allah is All-Seeing. He
is aware of all that we do- good or bad. He loves us no
matter what and he wants us to repent and return to Him. The
minute we seek His forgiveness, He not only grants it but
also forgets it. On true repentance, all the past sins are
cleared off from our record book.
So fellow, don’t let the devil play with you. Seek Allah’s
forgiveness and come under His infinite Mercy.
