Osteoporosis

For Urdu Slides Click here |
What is it?
Osteoporosis is a weakening of the bones, that can
lead to breaks which are difficult to heal. Bones
are made up of a thick outer shell with a honeycomb
mesh inside.
Osteoporosis occurs when the gaps in this honeycomb
become bigger making the bone fragile and brittle
causing them to break easily. The wrists, hips and
spine are particularly at risk.
What causes it?
During childhood and the teenage years the skeleton
grows and develops, with the bones getting longer
and the internal mesh becoming more dense until they
achieve their greatest density when a person is in
their late 20s. A natural part of the ageing process
is that bones get weaker in people over 30 and the
honeycomb becomes less dense. However, in some cases
this occurs faster than in others leading to
osteoporosis. A poor diet in youth can also lay the
foundations for the disease in later life.
Who gets it?
Women are particularly at risk because they have
smaller more fragile bones to start off with.
This is complicated by the menopause during which
the body stops producing oestrogen - a hormone
essential for good bone health.
And because of the
natural ageing process, the risk increases with age.
However, more and more research is indicating that
the disease can affect younger people, with the
National Osteoporosis Society reporting an increase
in incidence of the disease among young women,
particularly those who are underweight or who have
suffered anorexia.
How can it be prevented?
Diet and exercise are the two key preventive
measures. The Chartered Society of Physiotherapy
says skipping, jogging and aerobics are the best
exercises to beat the disease. A high calcium,
well-balanced diet throughout life but especially
while the body is still developing is recommended.
Dr Nicola Keay, an osteoporosis researcher who has
studied the effect of the disease on young women,
said there were dangers in failing to find a
balance.
"If you're doing too much exercise or don't eat
enough, or if you don't do any exercise and eat lots
of fast food, those extremes obviously aren't good,"
she said.
"The message is to get a balance - do enough
exercise, eat a reasonable diet and don't go on a
crash diet at 10 or 12 worrying about being too fat
because it's the worst thing you can do for your
bones."
What is the treatment?
Gentle exercise can help those who are already
suffering the disease but have not yet suffered any
fractures to rebuild bone strength.
Drug treatments
can help restore levels of oestrogen in those who
have stopped producing it, or target it to where it
is needed in people who have low levels of the
hormone.
These therapies include including hormone
replacement therapy, oestrogen derivatives and a new
generation of drugs known as selective oestrogen
receptor modulators.

Is the world
heading for a food crisis? |

The World
Bank has said a rapid rise in food prices
could push 100 million people in poor
countries deeper into poverty. This follows
the head of the International Monetary Fund
(IMF) warning that hundreds of thousands of
people will face starvation if costs keep
rising.
A world wide survey was
conducted by the UN. The only question asked
was:
"Would you
please give your honest opinion about
solutions to the food shortage in the rest
of the world?"
The survey was a huge failure, In Africa
they didn't know what 'food' meant, In India
they didn't know what 'honest' meant, In
Europe they didn't know what 'shortage'
meant, In China they didn't know what
'opinion' meant, In the Middle East they
didn't know what 'solution' meant, In South
America they didn't know what 'please'
meant,
and in the USA they didn't know
what 'The rest of the World meant!
Are
you worried about the cost of basic foods?
The price of
rice has risen by as much as 70% during the
past year, with prices set to rise still
further, The International Rice Research
Institute (IRRI) has warned. Factors such as
flooding, cold weather and urbanisation are
depleting food supply.
Already food riots are leading to concerns
of political instability.
Are you affected by growing food costs?
Are you concerned rising food prices will
weaken political stability where you live?

asalamualikum,
thanks for ur contribution for the
development of Pakistani community. I would
like to draw ur attention to a problem.
There is no school for Pakistani children in
al Kharj. Recently Indian embassy opened a
school here. I had to admit my daughter in
this school as there is no Pakistani school
in Al Kharj. Now the problem is that they
teach children their own social study which
is good for knowledge but in this way
Pakistani children shall not be able to know
about Pakistan and Urdu. I know that it is
difficult but is it possible that through
embassy we introduce our own book of social
study and Urdu in Indian embassy school? By
doing so our children will not forget their
country. If opening of a Pakistani school is
impossible then I think this step is easy
for Pakistani embassy. I will be very
grateful if our embassy do some thing about
this serious issue.
Dear Bhai, thanks for
the email. At times we feel that our
community members think that this newsletter
or all other community services that we
provide are brought to you by the embassy. We notice
this impression from your mail as well. Please
note that we have no relationship with the
embassy. We are a community driven community
that operates without any any help from any
Govt. channel. Now coming to your question,
first attempt should be that a letter is
written by parents in Al Kharj to the
Ambassador and wait for his response. If no
response received then do what we expect
from CP community. Gather Pakistani parents
and try to establish a private school
yourself. I am sure you will find parents
who can be of great help in such a project.
CP can help you by first inviting parents in
Al Kharj to such meeting and then also help
you getting all the procedures for opening
up such a community school.
Remember Allah SWT helps those who help
themselves!
Time of depending on others is over as never
there was a time that we depended on others
and we achieved some thing!

MOTHER
Assalam-O-Aliakum!
Name one of the most demanding and least appreciated jobs in
the world? ...Right. It is motherhood.
Mothers are one of the God’s greatest gifts. They nurture
the child and shower unconditional love. Mothers frequently
do so many of the overlooked daily jobs of living: packing
lunches, sending kids off to school, helping with their
homework, cooking food, doing grocery, laundry… and the
list goes on. Managing a household along with raising
children is an exhausting job. Yet mothers are often the
least appreciated members of a family because they
Fellows, like so many other Divine blessings, we take our
parents for granted. We seldom appreciate what our parents
do for us. Mother’s day is celebrated yearly to honor
mothers for so much that they do. Motherhood is a not a nine
to four job, but a twenty four hour one. Then why shall we
just be appreciative towards them for only a day. We shall
continue to show our parents, mothers especially, how much
we love them. This expression of love and affection shall
not be just limited to words, but we shall implement it
through our actions.
Mothers bear heat in kitchen in these scorching summers to
prepare meal for her family, yet when the food is served,
children fuss over it. How unjustified! And when something
agreeable to the child’s taste is on the table, children eat
it and walk off without appreciating the hands that cooked
it. Dear young friends, if any one of you happens to fall in
this category of children, do change yourself. Compliment
your mom for her work.
Once a child enters his teens, he thinks he is grown up and
no longer needs mother’s guidance. When mom is advising, he
makes faces. That’s very hurting. So all you such teenagers
out there… pay heed to your mom’s advices. Don’t make her
feel that you care not for what she is instructing you.
Many adolescents don’t bother to tell their mother where
they are going. Fellows, for a mother her children are her
heart. She is bound to feel worried about them once they are
out of her sight. So make it a habit to keep your parents
informed about your where abouts. Never ever lie to her. And
remember you never become too old to say sorry to your
mother when you make a mistake.
Fellows, become a good human being and make your mother
proud.
