We sadly announce the death of the creator and owner of the AsanQuran website, Abdul Mannan. He died in a tragic car accident at 2:00 am on the 16th of October, 2003 in Islamabad, Pakistan. Inna Lillahe Wa Inna Elaihi Rajioon. May Allah bless his soul. An extremely humble person, he never mentioned his name anywhere on the AsanQuran website or on any of the Emails he sent. One purpose of sending this news to all of you is to offer as many prayers as possible.

RAMADAN

What many Muslims often ignore when fasting is that the daily diet during Ramadan must not differ substantially from the normal diet. It is important that during the fasting month, a person should maintain his normal weight. However, Ramadan is also ideal for those with weight problems to normalise his body weight. Just like normal days outside the fasting month, it is imperative to ensure that the food consumed during Ramadan is well-balanced and contain all the necessary nutritions from all the food groups. Dieticians have also pointed out that it is good to avoid spicy and fried food as they can cause indigestion and heart-burn. All these tips are actually not new. If Muslims carefully study the traditions of the Prophet Muhammad vis-a-vis Ramadan, then it is clear that there are health benefits behind each of them. The Prophet enjoined Muslims to break fast with dates. Dates are in actual fact an excellent source for sugar, fibre, carbohydrate, potassium and magnesium. This will ensure that the body gets recharged during iftar (breaking of fast). The Prophet also encouraged Muslims to proceed with the Maghrib prayers after breaking fast (with dates) before continuing with the proper meal. Interestingly enough, this health tip has many benefits to the body. It is actually not healthy to suddenly fill the stomach with so much food in a short time as this will cause indigestion, constipation, headaches, muscle cramps, sore joints and dietary disorders. The body will be in a state of shock if food is consumed hurriedly. By starting with something light like dates then proceeding with prayers, the body will have time to prepare itself for food after a period of 12 hours without food. One should not rush to consume as much food as possible upon sunset. On top of this, Muslims should observe moderation in particular during the breaking of fast. This is in fact another tradition from the Prophet. Over indulgence should be avoided. Eat only what is necessary and excessiveness should not be a habit.

Margarine vs. Butter: Which is Better?

First came butter, and it was good, very good. When more economical margarine came along, butter became bad. But butter lovers were redeemed when the news came that margarines were high in a new type of artery-clogging fat called trans fat. Yet butter appears to be falling from nutritional favor again. "The healthier choice is one of the soft margarines, without a doubt," says Alice H. Lichtenstein, DSc, professor of nutrition at Tufts University. "Butter is extremely high in saturated fatty acids, and saturated fatty acids are the most potent in terms of increasing ["bad"] LDL cholesterol levels," Lichtenstein tells WebMD. "A lot of margarines are now trans fat free, and you can tell by the consistency, the softer the better." Trans fats are created when manufacturers turn liquid fats such as oils into solid ones, like traditional margarine. Research has shown that trans fats raise LDL "bad" cholesterol levels, and this can contribute to the buildup of fatty plaque in arteries. Lichtenstein says it's important to look at the sum total of both saturated and trans fats when selecting a spread for your toast, rather than focusing on one or the other. But if you're a butter lover, Carter says you don't have to completely forsake butter due to nutritional concerns. "I trained as a chef in France many years ago and believe that a little cooking oil and butter is one of the best flavors, so I can get by with a tablespoon of butter when I'm cooking to get the flavor," says Carter. "But you are not going to find sticks of butter on my table."

What are the symptoms of asthma?

People with asthma experience symptoms when the airways tighten, inflame, or fill with mucus. Common symptoms of asthma include:

  • Coughing, especially at night

  • Wheezing

  • Shortness of breath

  • Chest tightness, pain, or pressure

Not every person with asthma has the same symptoms in the same way. You may not have all of these symptoms, or you may have different symptoms at different times. Your symptoms may also vary from one asthma attack to the next, being mild during one asthma attack and severe during another. Some people with asthma may go for extended periods without having any symptoms, interrupted by periodic worsening of their symptoms called asthma attacks, while others have some symptoms every day. In addition, some people with asthma may only have symptoms during exercise or when they are exposed to allergy-causing substances or viral infections like colds. Mild asthma attacks are generally more common. Usually, the airways open up within a few minutes to a few hours. Severe attacks are less common but last longer and require immediate medical help. It is important to recognize and treat even mild symptoms to help you prevent severe episodes and keep asthma under better control.

QUESTIONS RELATED TO INVESTMENT IN PAKISTANI STOCK MARKET
Can you please explain me a bit about NIT units. Are they good enough to be invested in?
Ghulam Murtaza, Jeddah
Murtaza Bhai, Thank you for your mail and question. The unique attraction of NIT units is that it provides investors with a one-window entry to Pakistan’s equity markets, which at any times can be illiquid and less volatile rather than Stock. So NIT units are less risky but on the other hand less margin of profit (High Risk/High gain Low Risk/Low gain).
The NIT units are managed by National Investment Trust Limited (NITL) which incorporated as an unquoted public limited company. NITL’s objective is to provide its Unit-holders with a balance between their regular income needs and long-term capital appreciation. The principal activity of the company is to manage an open-end mutual fund. The fund is the largest open-end mutual fund in Pakistan, with investments in approximately 600 of the 706 listed Pakistani Companies. NIT’s portfolio has over 90 percent correlation with the Karachi Stock Exchange all Share Index and is as such the nearest proxy to an Index fund in Pakistan. The fund has also significant strategic holdings in some of Pakistan’s best-managed companies and in major privatization transactions e.g. PSO, Sui Northern, Sui Southern, PTC, KESC etc. These companies comprise the backbone of Pakistan’s economy. So the price of the NIT units and its profitability can also be affected according to the price and performance of these major stocks companies.

Growing plants indoors has been a source of enjoyment and beauty for people for many centuries. Indoor plants are not only used in the home, but also in malls, restaurants, office buildings, and hotels. When carefully chosen and strategically placed, plants add ambiance and warmth to any room in your home.
Purchasing your Plants The most important thing to remember is that the plants you select must be compatible with the environment you provide. Choose plants whose foliage is rich green and uniform in color. Inspect the plant for pests, such as mealy bugs, spider mites and worms. Check the label for the mature height of the plant. Make sure that it is not too tall for the location in your home. Look for signs of plant damage, such as broken stems or torn leaves. Look for healthy new growth. For greater success make sure that the suggested light conditions of the plant match those found in your home.
Maintaining Your Plants Light, temperature, water, and nutrition are the main factors affecting plant growth. When possible, select plants that are known to be successful for interior use.  Make sure your plants have sufficient light. Growing plants indoors can be a challenge, since light intensity is often very low. If using artificial light, plan to provide light for 12 - 16 hours. This number is likely to be higher for flowering plants. A sunny southern exposure will provide extra light for plants that need high levels of light. Be on the lookout for phototropism (the tendency for plants to grow in the direction of the highest light) rotate your plants periodically to avoid a lopsided look.
Temperature  Most indoor plants grow well under typical conditions in the office and home. The ideal temperature is about an average of 22C. Avoid drafty areas such as doorways and air conditioner vents. Temperatures that are too high can cause plants to wilt quickly.
Water and fertilizer Over watering is a common problem with interior plants - when in doubt do not water! It is easier for a plant to recover from under watering than it is for it to recover from over watering. Use your finger or a soil probe to check your plants' need for water. Probe into the soil as far as possible. A good rule-of-thumb is to water until the water comes out the bottom of the container. A balanced slow release fertilizer (14-14-14) works best for your interior plants. Look for one that lasts three or four months. For a quick green up try a 20-20-20 analysis liquid fertilizer mixed at half strength.
Caring for your plants Keeping your plants free of pests and keeping the plants in good condition are important factors in interior plant care. The most common insects that attack plants indoors are mealybugs, scale, and mites. Inspect the your plant's leaves regularly for these pests. Don't forget to check the underside of the leaves, as this is a favorite spot for insects to hide. Using a soapy solution to clean the plant leaves regularly is beneficial. A spray of soap and water about three-tbsp. soap to one gallon of water can control many insects. Root rots and other soil diseases are caused by over watering. Periodically check the plants' roots to ensure that they are a healthy white color, not brown and mushy. Removing yellow leaves improves the appearance of your plants greatly. An occasional trim will cause the plant to fill in and remain uniform in shape. Cleaning the leaves with soapy water will remove the dust buildup and give the leaves a shiny, healthy appearance.
Placing your plants  Where you place your plant in a room creates an impact upon the atmosphere and ambience of the area. Tall, potted plants can create a quiet reading corner or add privacy to an office space. Hanging plants can provide a screen for a bathroom or bedroom window. An orchid may add tropical appeal to a patio or other living space. Avoid placing plants in heavy traffic areas or small spaces - they may just add clutter to these spaces. Make sure that plants placed on tables or in other conversation spots are not too large, hindering the conversation.
Containers for Plants
A decorative pot will increase the beauty of any plant that you add to your interior space. Regardless of the decorative appeal, a container with good drainage is a must for an interior plant. Place a saucer underneath the container to catch the run off water before it reaches your floor. Polystyrene peanuts will keep the container light in weight, increase your drainage, and decrease the soil needed to fill the pot. When stepping up plants to the next size do not increase size of the container more than 2 sizes greater than the current one. Baskets and other decorator pots are readily available at home improvement and home decorating stores and are easy to change with the seasons and your moods.

Some Health Guidelines for Ramadan
This article provides useful advice on how to avoid some common problems encountered in Ramadan. If followed, it would enable one to fast comfortably and enjoy fully the spiritual benefits of Ramadan. During the holy month of Ramadan, our diet should not differ very much from our normal diet and should be as simple as possible. The diet should be such that we maintain our normal weight, neither losing nor gaining. However, if one is over-weight, Ramadan is an ideal time to normalize one's weight. In view of the long hours of fasting, we should consume slow digesting foods including fiber containing-foods rather than fast-digesting foods. Slow digesting foods last up to 8 hours, while
fast-digesting foods last for only 3 to 4 hours.
* Slow-digesting foods are foods that contain grains and seeds like barley, wheat, oats, millet, semolina, beans, lentils, whole meal flour, unpolished rice, etc. (called complex carbohydrates).
* Fast-burning foods are foods that contain sugar, white flour, etc. (called refined carbohydrates).
* Fiber-containing foods are bran-containing foods, whole wheat, grains and seeds, vegetables like green beans, peas, marrow, mealies, spinach, and other herbs like methie, the leaves of beetroot (iron-rich), fruit with skin, dried fruit especially dried apricots, figs and prunes, almonds, etc.
The foods eaten should be well-balanced, containing foods from each food group, i.e. fruits, vegetables, meat/chicken/fish, bread/cereals and dairy products. Fried foods are unhealthy and should be limited. They cause indigestion, heart-burn, and weight problem.

Keep Trying
Amna Tariq, Makkah

Assalam-O-Alikum. Hope you all are doing well.  This time we are going to talk about something that all of us come across many a times during our lives, but those who do not surrender to it are the winners. Yes… we are going to talk about Failure ...and the power of  Persistence.
Failure is a disappointment .You put in efforts to get a task done and it does not work.

We encounter many failures but we tend to forget them. Remember you fell many times before you were able to walk, you were almost drowned before you were able to swim, how many times you fell from your bicycle before you were able to ride it yourself. See...we all failed many times, but from these we learnt. Do not fret the failures but be concerned about the chances you miss when you do not try.

Persistence is firm determination and is essential for success. Abraham Lincoln, former
USA president is one of the outstanding examples of determination. In-spite of many failures, he never quit. Abraham Lincoln was born to a poor family. He faced defeats throughout his life including eight lost elections and twice failures in business. He is a champion who never gave up and ultimately made up to the presidency of USA. When he lost in senate elections he said,  “It is a slip and not a fall”.
Growth is a process that is conditioned by learning. Learning is a process of trail and error. We experiment every day. Some experiments fail and other work. All these experiments are as much the part of the process as the experiment that finally clicks.
In school, we are taught lessons, which you may find, unrelated or dull. Similar is the case with life. Each new day brings us the chance to learn lessons. Life is like a full-time informal school and since are birth till death we register ourselves in it.
We must not be afraid of failures. Of course they are bad, but it does not mean that we shall not try because of the fear that it might not work to success.
History is full of great people who failed many times but they did not loose heart and kept trying: Walt Disney is famous for his Disney land. He lost his job and got bankrupt several times before he built
Disneyland. Winston Churchill, former prime Minister of England, has a lifetime full of defeats and setbacks.
Even in our academic career we encounter setbacks. In your school, sometimes you are not able to do well in exam or fail a test. It is natural to feel depress at such times but that is not the solution. You may be thinking of giving up ...but that is a wrong attitude. It is not the end of the world. You need to take fresh start with a healthy mind and more focused plan of action. Take your setbacks as a challenge and not as a curse. Get back to work with a new zeal and zest …and you would come off with flying colors next time!
I would wrap up by quoting words from Bill Marriott of the Marriott Hotels:
“Failure? I never encountered it. All I ever met were temporary set backs.”

RIVER OF LIFE

By S.A.J. Shirazi

Traveling on Grand Trunk Road all my life, the Road captured my imagination as a cultural curiosity when I read Rudyard Kipling's Kim. At the beginning of the last century Kipling called it "a wonderful spectacle.... without crowding.... green-arched, shade-flecked ... a river of life." But Pakistan's National Highway Number 5 (N-5), alias the Grand Trunk Road, or simply the GT Road, presents a different impression now.
