Obesity 'doubles
sight-loss risk' |
|
 |
Obese people have double the risk
of losing their sight because their weight increases their
chance of developing certain conditions, a report has said.
The Royal National Institute of the Blind said the obese
risk cataracts and age-related macular degeneration - the
most common cause of sight loss.
It warned that millions of obese adults and children in the
UK are also at risk from other eye conditions. The RNIB said
people did not do enough to look after their eyes.
Latest government estimates predict that 13m adults and
children could be obese by 2010, if no action is taken.
Increased risk
The RNIB says being obese is linked to a risk of developing
four main conditions linked to sight loss.
Age-related macular degeneration (AMD) is the UK's leading
cause of sight loss - with around 500,000 people affected.
People with a body mass index of over 30, who are classed as
obese, have double the risk of the most common form of the
condition - dry AMD.
Obesity has also been found to increase the rate of
progression of wet AMD, which can lead to severe sight loss
and blindness in as little as three months.
People who have a genetic predisposition to AMD must be
particularly careful about their weight as their risk of the
condition increases from a four-fold risk if they are a
normal weight to an 11-fold risk if they are obese. Those who
are obese also have double the risk of cataracts, which are
linked to one in four cases of sight loss in the over-75s.
Obesity also significantly increases the risk of type 2
diabetes, which is linked to diabetic retinopathy.
The risk of sight loss through diabetes is also particularly
high in people from Asian, African and African/Caribbean
backgrounds, who are four to five times more likely to
develop diabetes.
There is also a link between being severely overweight and
glaucoma, caused by pressure within the eye. 'Treatment
possible' Barbara McLaughlan, an eye health consultant
who wrote the RNIB report, said: "With a staggering one in
five adults and children in the UK now considered to be
obese, RNIB believes it is vital that people are made aware
of the risks to their sight.
"Sight is the sense we most fear losing, but most people
don't do nearly enough to look after their eyes.
"To safeguard sight we recommend people maintain a healthy
weight, eat lots of fresh fruit and vegetables, take
exercise to improve general health, don't smoke and most
importantly have regular eye tests.
"Many thousands of people lose their sight each year through
conditions that could have been treated if picked up early
enough through an eye test."

My
2nd Home
Had it not
been truly my 2nd home, it would not have been possible
for me to live for so many years in this peaceful,
brotherly, friendly, caring, and lovely Kingdom of Saudi
Arabia.
My hearty
and heartfelt greetings to everyone on the prestigious
National Day of the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia. Manzoor
Sheikh Dammam
As-salam-o-alaikum,
This second home of ours is almost as if I am living
here since birth. Now almost 10 years down the road
it seems that there is no place better than Saudi. I
don't want to go back home ever. A visit to holy
cities of Makkah and Madinah is the biggest charm.
We living out here do not realize this but we are
the most fortunate people to have this luxury. Ask
those who visit these cities once a year or lifetime
or never ever. The security forces of this country
must be given credit to have so much peace around
here. Comparing to the corruption and lawless
situation in our country its amazing to see these
people work with so much honesty and efficiently.
The government is the best by making this happen and
its biggest achievement is to organize the biggest
event of all times I.e Hajj. Hats off to them along
with all due credit for the efforts they put into to
make sure the residence of KSA get what they needs.
Even a small village in Saudi will have all the
basic necessities available and the things they do
to go out of their way to make life easier for the
citizens as well as expatriates. We expatriates
complain a lot about many things but on the whole
its nothings but pinch of salt in a river. Our
families back home are enjoying good life due to
this country as there is lot of barkat in the money
that we earn. On the whole we must play our part to
abide by the rules of this country and stay peaceful
with doing more than we could to play our part in
making this beautiful country progress. This is the
birth place of Islam and its our duty to see to it
that this country stays strong and peaceful. I am
sure when time comes we all will be united to defend
this country and sacrifice whatever we have.
May Allah make us
united. Live with peace, love and harmony.
Regards,
Faisal - Riyadh

Saudi
National Day
Assalam-o-alikum
Well! Well!! The schools have opened and already two weeks
have passed by. Isn’t it nice meeting friends at school after
the long summer break and seeing how each have changed in just
two months time.
23rd September is the Saudi National Day. The significance of
this day for the Saudi nation is quite the same as of our
Independence Day. The Saudi National Day celebrates one of the
most important events of the 20th century, the founding of the
Kingdom of Saudi Arabia.
For us Pakistanis, residing in the Kingdom of Saudi, this
country is like a second home for us- a home in which we have
been welcomed by its Saudi owners. It is not easy to share
your home with outsider. It requires a big heart to hospitably
welcome others on your land. Pakistanis, like people hailing
from many other countries, have come over to the Kingdom to
provide them with our services to speed up the pace of the
progress of this nation. We in return enjoy the facilities and
richness of this country. Through the salaries that are
earned by the Pakistanis here and sent back to our country,
Pakistan is able to earn foreign exchange that helps country
meet its financial trade deficits.
There is another significance of the county too. Saudi Arabia
is like a religious emblem for the whole Muslim Umma. The two
holiest places of Muslims, Bait-Ullah and Holy Mosque of
Prophet are situated in KSA. Besides, in times of need Saudi
Arabia has always been in the forefront to help the whole
Muslim world.
Pakistan shares especially friendly ties with Saudi Arabia. In
rough times, may it be due to wars, or natural calamities,
Saudi Arabia has not only provided emotional and political
support but also financial assistance to us.
The National Day of Saudi provides us, yet another chance to
show, the warm and brotherly feeling Pakistani have for the
Saudi Nation. We, Pakistani, are like ambassadors of our
country here. We shall fully participate in the celebrations
of the Saudi National Day on behalf of our country. We shall
rejoice with them in their happiness and join them in their
vow to work for the progress of the country in special and
Muslim world in general.
Happy Saudi National Day!
Till next time, Allah Hafiz
