You can water your plants while you are away by placing one end of string in a bucket of water and the other in the plant’s soil. As long as the bucket is positioned higher than the plant, the string will soak up the water and keep the soil moist.

Recognizing the
Signs of Suicide

Suicide can be prevented. In most cases, there are warning signs that someone you know is contemplating a suicide attempt. The most effective way to prevent suicide is to recognize the warning signs, take them seriously and know how to respond to them.

The warning signs are:

  • Talking about suicide (killing one's self)

  • Always talking or thinking about death

  • Making comments about being hopeless, helpless, or worthless

  • Saying things like "It would be better if I wasn't here" or "I want out"

  • Depression (deep sadness, loss of interest, trouble sleeping and eating) that gets worse

  • A sudden switch from being very sad to being very calm or appearing to be happy

  • Having a "death wish," tempting fate by taking risks that could lead to death, like driving through red lights

  • Losing interest in things one used to care about

  • Visiting or calling people one cares about

  • Putting affairs in order, tying up lose ends, changing a will

Be especially concerned if a person is exhibiting any of these warning signs and has attempted suicide in the past. According to the American Foundation for Suicide Prevention, between 20-50% of people who commit suicide have had a previous attempt.

5 Pieces of Fruit
a Day!

To meet your "five to nine pieces of fresh fruits a day" you can squeeze the fruits instead of peeling them and eating them by hand. Squeezing is much more efficient: one glass of 2 squeezed oranges, 2 mandarins and 1 grapefruit can be squeezed in 5 minutes. If you eat 1 banana afterwards you already have consumed 6 pieces of fresh fruits! This also means that you can consume the largest part of the required nutritional elements you need for a day in just 10 minutes...

 Success is not a secret
It is a choice that is made over and over again. Success is not something that can be denied to you. It is something that you can always choose to accept. How do you accept success? You accept success by making the effort instead of making excuses. You accept success by taking responsibility instead of counting on someone else to do it for you. You accept success by being truthful with others and, just as importantly, with yourself. You accept success when things get tough, by being positive and innovative instead of becoming despondent. You accept success by being who you are and by contributing what you can, rather than pretending to be someone else.  Every day you can choose either to accept success of to just let it pass you by. With each thought, each word, each action, choose to accept success.

Doubling your Money and Rule of 72

Have you always wanted to be able to do compound interest problems in your head? Probably not, unless you're a finance nut, but it's a very useful skill to have because it gives you a lightning fast benchmark to determine how good (or not so good) a potential investment is likely to be.
The rule says that to find the number of years required to double your money at a given interest rate, you just divide the interest rate into 72. For example, if you want to know how long it will take to double your money at eight percent interest, divide 8 into 72 and get 9 years.   Exact answer is 9.01 years.
As you can see, the "rule" is remarkably accurate, as long as the interest rate is less than about twenty percent; at higher rates the error starts to become significant.
You can also run it backwards: if you want to double your money in six years, just divide 6 into 72 to find that it will require an interest rate of about 12 percent. Exact Answer is 12.25%.

 Rights of Neighbors in Islam
Assalam-O-Alaikum. Hope you all are doing well by the grace of Allah Almighty. Today we will take an important topic from social conduct for pondering …and that is Relationship with neighbors. Respect for the rights of each other form an important part of social conduct. In our society we observe that apart from our own family and relatives, there is a permanent association between a man and his neighbors. Need for mutually affectionate, cooperative relationship with neighbors is thus an integral part of prospering society. Religion, Islam has laid great stress on preserving the rights of neighbors.
Quran calls upon us to be good and courteous in our behavior towards our neighbor. Good conduct with neighbours is highly appreciated such that there is a hadith that a man, whose neighbor is not safe from his misdeeds, is not a true believer in Islam.
The holy Prophet (peace be upon him) has said that Angel Jibrael so overwhelmingly emphasized the rights of the neighbor that the Prophet feared that neighbors might be made partakers (participant) of one's inheritance. The prophet has also said that he shall not go to Heaven from whose mischief his neighbor does not feel secure.
Emphasizing on rights of neighbors, the holy Prophet advised that whenever a Muslim brings fruits for his children he should either send some to his neighbors as a gift or at least not throw the peelings outside his house. This would prevent the neighbor from feeling deprived. Again, he says that a person who enjoys a full meal while his neighbor is starving really has no faith in Islam. On one occasion, the holy Prophet said that a man is really good if his neighbors regard him as such and he is bad if they consider him so.
Imagine neighbors living right next door to each other for years and yet not being aware of each other. How can such society where the people have no confidence in their next-door neighbor prosper? On the contrary, imagine a society with all neighbors that are loving and cooperative with one another, sharing each others sorrows and happiness... such behavior would result in having social relations in which one can rely upon the other and regard his life, honor and property safe among his neighbors.
Now let us take a look at our society and ask ourselves “Are we practicing these commandments of Allah regarding neighbors rights?” Complaints about disturbance from neighbors like noise, barking dogs, loud music or TV’s uproar and banging doors are commonly heard. This annoyance can be a real pain in the neck. So how do we resolve this? To start the reformation, we must start from ourselves. We shall first try to correct ourselves. We shall make every possible effort to avoid causing any disturbances for those residing around our homes. Garbage thrown out of the home on the road is also a causes unease to neighbors. We shall make sure to dump them in garbage cans.
Having good relationships with neighbors is great virtue. Here, when we are not in our county, and are miles apart from our relatives, it is our neighbors who we come across most. In our sorrows and happiness they are the first to come. Good neighborhood is a great blessing.
Here are few tips to start off with developing good relations with neighbors especially if they are not Pakistanis. If we have non-Pakistani neighbors, one can initiate by sending them our typical Pakistani foods…and extending it by presenting them with hadyas (gifts). For example, when we return from vacations from Pakistan, we can bring them gifts from the wide products of our typical heritage. We can tell them about our country and its God-gifted beautiful lands and hence promote tourism. Similarly, through neighbors you can get familiarization with various cultures of other nations.
Summing up, rights of neighbors involve being kind and considerate towards them, safeguarding the honor of neighbor’s household and family, occasionally sending gift especially when they are needy (Sending food items if they are poverty-stricken ) and not cause them trouble by getting angry and quarrelsome on minor things.
May Allah help us in fulfilling the rights others have on us? Ameen!
