Tariq Javed
was the chairman of the Riyadh Cricket League from 1990-1997, and he played and captained
the Riyadh Cricket League on many occasions. He was a prolific batsman who set many
batting records in the League and in the inter-kingdom matches.
Tariq Javed's claim to fame is his short lived career as an International Cricketer
representing the lucky Canadian team which played in the second World Cup in 1979. It was
his innings of 52 not out in a 6th wicket partnership of 112 against Bermuda in the ICC
trophy semi-final which saw the Canadians through to the World Cup. Sri Lanka as the
Winner of the ICC trophy were the other non major teams. Tariq played against Pakistan,
England and Australia without much luck, and also played against Sri Lanka. Tariq
captained the Canadian team in the 1982 ICC trophy. In Canada most of his cricket was
played in Montreal and Ottawa and he captained the Quebec provincial team on many
occasions. He won the honors of being Cricketer of the Year three times and set many
batting records in the Montreal League. Before migrating to Canada Tariq played much
cricket in Karachi and represented Karachi Blues in first class cricket. He also played
for Karachi University in the inter-varsity championships and the Karachi Board. His
highest score was 234 in an inter-school match at the age of 14 and 211 in an
inter-college match when he was 15.
