RIYADH,
April 9, 2001 Surprising the pundits, Garry Origan emerged the new champion at the
recently concluded eighth Open Golf Championship 2001 organized by hotel Intercontinental
and played at its Palms Golf and Country club.
The jubilant hero amidst loud cheers
received the glittering championship trophy, an American airline round trip business class
ticket to the United States and the cash prize from golf director and PGA professional
Jason Fullard who was assisted at the awarding by Baby Joseph. The runner up, Mario
Marimon bagged the Lufthansa airline ticket to the United States along with the cash
prize. The third award went to Dave Passion. He collected the cash prize along with a
Lufthansa airline ticket to Europe.
At stake for the fourth prize was a Jordanian airline ticket to Amman and the cash prize.
This went to M. S. Kim. The fifth and sixth positions went to Ces Thompson and John
Warner. Both received Bang & Olufsen telephone systems and cash prizes. The remaining
winners from seventh to tenth places were given only cash prizes by the organizers.
The daily best gross and best net prizes went to a lone Pakistani player Muhammed Anwar
Naz, Ador Laxa, Kim and Warner. In addition, many nearest the pin awards were also
presented for various holes.
This two days event, participated by players from various nationalities, was played on a
stroke play format over 36 holes. It was sponsored by American airline, Lufthansa airline,
Royal Jordanian airline, Bang & Olufsen and Saudi Hollandi Bank. The simple but
impressive prize presentation concluded with lunch for all. |
