RIYADH, August
15, 2000 – The sponsors’ team Ace survived a pressure packed decisive game
enroute to a 10-5 win over Aphidech Group while Spice Boys, despite losing the second
doubles, down KFH Iskan Knight with an identical score in the first Sheraton – Fila
Open Dart team tournament, billed as Sheraton-Fila Dart2K, which got off to a flying start
at the health club of Sheraton Riyadh Hotel and Towers. The first game results showed a high
debut output from rookie teams – Saudi Ericsson and Kingdom’s Comer. Although
losers, Ericsson managed to pocket five points against veteran Casper and the Comer was
able to deny six points to a more seasoned Striker Point. The Four Seasons Furniture,
formerly known as STRD, beat the Shifa Intruders 10-5 where the victory featured a 138 out
shot, the highest so far, by captain Lito Javier in the singles match against Oliver
Robles. Of the second game action, KFH Iskan Knights recovered from their first loss to defeat the Comer 10-5. Ace also improved from a cold first game and gave only two points to the Ericsson. Their Pol Dagundon displayed his old form by finishing a 128 against John Damaso in the singles. The Spice Boys also went rampant against Four Seasons Furniture for a lop-sided 14-1 victory. Casper, the Ace’s sister team, opened with a heavy barrage for a 6-0 ending in the singles and never looked back to finish up 11-4 against the Shifa Intruders. The Striker Point, runner up to the disbanded Snipers in the Fila Dart Challenge 99, recorded a win over Aphidech Group. Javier along with Knights’ Rex Abrenica produced the league first two Ton80s. The Dark2K event is being organized by the Expat Darters of Saudi Arabia (EDSA), a prime association of dart enthusiasts based in Riyadh. The ten contesting teams are Sheraton-Fila Ace Darters of Flor Almoite, Shifa Intruders of Rene Caronan, Saudi Ericsson Darters of John Damaso, Striker Point of Lito Capacio, Kingdom’s Comer of Ed De Leon, Four Seasons Furniture of Lito Javier, King Fahad Hospital’s Iskan Knights of Dave Fowler, Aphidech Group of Abet Apon, Casper of Sandy Alegre and the Spice Boys of Jun Cabaltera. Highlighting the pre-games ceremony was a brief introduction of the individuals that are behind the organizing and sponsorship of this league by EDSA chairman Flor Almoite. This was followed by welcoming the rookie teams and the players. The tournament director, Banny Alagar assisted by EDSA president Mannie Barroga and its director Bobot Quines, elaborated on the tourney guidelines and mechanics. Courtesy of Thomas Boesch, beverages were provided free to the spectators and players. As per the organizers, this gala is the first among the many sport activities lined up to be hosted and sponsored by Sheraton under the guidance of Boesch and their general manager, Michael Wegner. The Dart2K is also supported by engineer Abdul Mumen Al Garawi, general manager of Sodas Sports, the sole distributor of Fila sportswear in the Kingdom. The games are played in 01 mode comprising six singles at one point each, three doubles at two points each and a team match at three points for a total of 15. A team requires eight points to seal a victory. Admission is free at the health club and spectators are welcome to enjoy the excitement every Friday starting from 1.30 p.m. |
