RIYADH, August 30, 2000 It was the day for the Security Forces
Hospital (SFH) and a unlucky one for the King Faisal Specialist Hospital & Research
Center (KFSH&RC) as two different line up from SFH beat their counterpart in the
final, first at the King Fahad National Guard recreation center and then followed it up at
the Oasis compound with another fine victory to capture the exclusive ladies category B1
and C1 titles respectively in the HITTT 2000 tennis gala, an exclusive event for the city
hospitals.
For the B1 championship, the new champions led by Cecile Bago defeated KFSH&RC by
38-25. The latter mentored by captain Yollie Maborang and needing to win with at least
eight points margin met stiff resistance early on. Vivienne Sabello of the victorious side
stopped Cathy Malayas 8-6 and in the next Dhel Lopez conquered Betsy Costumbrado in an
identical fashion. Also, the next two doubles did not prove any better for the losers.
SFH best pair Nelda Flauta and Isabel Lata routed Celia Arrastia, assistant captain and
Johanna Rint combination 8-1. Their Joy Siongco and Heidi Agustin also raced past the
tandem of Maborang, the captain and Myriel Quilacio 8-2.
In one of the tensest situation, the losing team had to win the last set now to secure a
runner up place in this class. And in their beginning, their pair Jean Borjal and Quilacio
struggled against Marivic Tuquiero, the captain and Bago. The latter kept up the pressure
in the middle game, evened up the score at 6-6 and threatened to pull ahead. However,
Borjal and Quilacio kept their poise. Then at match point, Quilacio made the winning shot,
a lob that nicked the baseline. To the delight of their supporters, they won 8-6 thus
finishing runner up.
For the category C1 crown, it was also a showdown between the second strings of SFH and
KFSH&RC. And it was another sweet tasting victory for the former squad, prevailing
this time by 36-27 score. They began on a fast note when Nina Sanchez, top singles player,
overpowered Gemma Sahibil 8-1 and Fatima Basilio edged out Venus Alegre 8-6.
KFSH&RC combination of Rose Santos and Fe Roxas kept their team in the match when they
set aside Agnes Vila and Rose Leong 8-4. But in the last two doubles matchs, the eventual
champions clawed their way to victory. First, Agnes Vila and Praxy Boncales winning 8-7
against Geline Suarez and Malou Carido. In the next, captain Babes Vasquez and her partner
Fanny Minas, the assistant captain, on line for the best double players of the tournament
award, won 8-4 over captain Amor Robles and Au Gutierrez, the assistant captain.
Undefeated here in this category, they became the deserving champions. On points basis,
the runner up honor went to KKESH squad comprising of captain Nitz Fernandez, assistant
captain Lilia Basilio, Jubie Estero also HITTT organizing committee vice chairman, Janet
Pacleb, Janet Hicban, Evelyn Baldos, Bibian Parulan and Nympha Cosico.
The organizers are gearing up for the colorful awarding to be held soon at the Jeddah Well
compound located near King Fahad international soccer stadium in Riyadh. The HITTT 2000
tournament is being sponsored by Power Horse Energy Drink, Coca-Cola, Sarawat Superstore,
ANSERI Cargo and Al Hakbani Establishment. |
