Aamer Javed Wins Under-14 STF Al Babtain Mini Tennis Title

RIYADH, May 29, 2001 – Young and ever agile Aamer Javed captured the Masters trophy in the final round played at the hotel Intercontinental recreation center by defeating Abduaziz Abu Rasheed 4-0, 4-0 in the recently concluded Saudi Tennis Federation (STF) Al Babtain Mini tennis programme, the Nike tournament series.
The program for the youngsters in categories Under-10, Under-12, Under-14 began back in November. It was mainly supported by Al Babtain. The other co-sponsors were Sports Ghornatah, the agent of Nike sport products. The schools and hotels that provided the use of their facilities were Najd, Intercontinental, Sheraton and King Faisal specialist hospital.
Top eight players based on their points made it to the Masters after competing in the six open events, said Mark Stanley, the hotel Intercontinental recreation manager. A total of thirty players competed in this program for the Under-14 age group. The tournament was played on single knock out basis.
The eight who made it to the Masters in this category were the eventual champion Javed, Hasan Shiba, De Guzman, Anas Abdu, Abdulaziz Abu Rasheed, M. Dela Cruz, Salman Homoud and Abdulaziz Turki.
Of the Open tournaments, Javed came out top at Najd and Intercon in the first and second meets. Rasheed topped in the fourth at Najd school. Abdu claimed the top prize in the fifth Open and Rasheed again claimed the sixth open title.
Before reaching the final, Javed who last year won the Under-16 Desert Classic at the Intercon, routed Hamoud 4-0, 4-0. In the second semifinal, Rasheed down Abdu 4-0, 5-3.

The jubilant champion, last year came fourth in the Ontario province ranking when on vacation with his father, Tariq Javed. Also, he played for the Ontario provincial team against Quebec. In the Under-12 category, he won four tournaments and also took part in the Summer Games, a resemblance of Olympics style event.
Speaking after the awarding, the champion said, "I will be going to Canada with my father again in two weeks time and hope to play lot of tennis there."
In his winding up speech, Stanley appreciated the efforts of the STF and the sponsors for lining up this gala for the young ones.
